This subject was looking a little lonely over here, so I thought I'd open it up a little (or attempt to)! Anybody reading anything interesting these days?

I got two new books - I haven't read them yet, but hope to start soon. They are "Keeping Honey Bees" by Kim Pezza (Backyard Farming) and "The Beauty of Herbs" by Jessica Dorfsmith. I hope to find time to ready when my husband leaves for work across the country - he'll be gone 2 months, so I'm hoping to get lots done!

Oh my goodness, two months! That's a long time! I just got a new herb book recently too. The Complete Herbal Tutor by Anne McIntyre. So far I've only read the intro and about global herbal traditions, but it looks like a great book. I should read some of the bee books since my husband wants to get bees. Do you have bees, or are you reading it for the badge?

I'm reading Worlds of Exile and Illusion by Ursula LeGuin. I've read it before, but it's been a while. She writes the best sci-fi in my opinion. I also have Dune borrowed from a friend, but I haven't started that yet.

I've never read Sci-Fi....maybe I should look up that one from the library and read it.

Bees - both :) We're hoping to get bees, so I bought the book on sale for only $5! I'd also like to get the badge....

Yes...two months is long :)

I am currently reading The Soul of a Horse by Joe Camp, and Somewhere Safe With Somebody Good by Jan Karon. I used to have a basket that I kept my to be read books in but it overflowed, so now there are books just in to be read stacks.

Denise I know the feeling! I have too many books on random shelves that are 'to be read'. I need to kick it into gear a little more with my reading.

Agree about so many books and so little time. They are true food for the brain. Recently finished The Market Gardener by Jean-Martin Fortier. Goes into detail. I need somebody to tell me what size cell tray to put, for example, Chinese cabbage seeds in, how long to keep them in tray before planting out, time period between starts to have constant supply. Crop rotation included. I have seen bits and pieces written elsewhere and understand that some prefer Coleman's advice but I like this one so much that although I bought it for my daughter, I'm keeping it :) will buy her one too...

So ladies - how were "Soil Sisters" and "The Market Gardner"? I read Janette Oke's "When Calls the Heart" which I LOVED (I needed an easy read!), and am thinking I need another fun book to read...

Soil Sisters was great! Janette Oke's "When Calls the Heart" is a great read! Did you read the series? The "Love Comes Softly" series was great, too!

I love all of Janette Oke's books. I'm intrigued by Soil Sisters and The Market Gardner. I'll have to look into those! I crave a book I can curl up into - just a good fiction book :) It's been a couple of months since I've read a book like that.

Per Sabrina's recommendation, I started reading "Stars Upside Down." What a REAL book - a book without the fluff, without the "political correct-ness." I am loving it! The raw emotions, the insight, the relate-ability. If any of you have the opportunity to read this book, I highly recommend it!!! I haven't finished it yet, but wow!

On a different note, have any of you heard of or read "The Shack." I've had two friends, both Christians, have very opposing views on it!

I've never heard of the shack. What's it about? Is it a Christian book?

The movie just came out or is suppose to... It is about a man who's daughter is abducted and murdered and becomes bitter... He is then invited by God (referred to as Papa in the book) to visit in the shack where his daughter was murdered. It has been compared to "Pilgrim's Progress" by some... yet others find it extremely unBiblical. I've been blown away by the polar opposite opinions of the book by Christians... And honestly, as much as I am intrigued by the topic of the book (it is apparently a very gripping and moving book), the views that it is un-Biblical, though it is "suppose" to be, has me scared to read it. Was wondering if anyone else had seen it.

I've read it, Shannon. It was given to me to read by my sister and brother-in-law, as they read it and were saying some things I felt were contrary to God's word. I read it so I could be more informed in how to respond to it. I was glad I read it for that reason, but I, personally, wouldn't sit down to read it unless I had a reason for it.
