I'm looking it up now because I never heard a peep about it before. I'm surprised to see it's not really a new book. I haven't gotten into the controversy yet.

OK, I understand the controversy. I kind of have mixed feelings about it. The book sounded interesting.

No - the book isn't new. I think the controversy is becoming an issue again because the movie is either out or coming out

Yeah that makes sense. Not so much on topic, but I'm just curious, what version of the Bible do you guys read?

Erin - depends on what you are referring to! For family reading time and the majority of my personal Bible reading, I read New King James... but we have numerous other versions in the house to read and compare what we are reading, to try to get a deeper understanding. My favorite version is NKJV though. You?

I grew up with King James Version, so that's what I prefer. It's what I used to memorize scripture, so other versions sound strange to me sometimes. LCMS (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod), which is what we are, uses the English Standard Version. Which is ok, but like I said, I prefer KJV.

There a couple moms in one of my homeschool groups that use The Scriptures. That's literally what it's called. I'd never heard of it til last year, but they follow something called Hebrew Roots. Have you ever heard of that? It's almost like Judaism, but it isn't. They focus a lot on the old testament and their scriptures are translated from either exclusively or almost exclusively Hebrew.

Erin - that's quite interesting. I never heard that before. I also use KJV.

I must admit that I avoid versions that do not even have Bible in their name! There was one that was quite popular about ten years ago, called "The Message." So many verses were changed to be "politically correct" and "updated" to today's way of thinking, that it wasn't even Scriptural any more! There are a few other versions that I avoid... but I think I am going to avoid starting a debate ;)

As far as books.... I finished all six books of the Canadian West series. But of course that means I have not sewn a thing!!! I also have the three books for the Return to the Canadian West series, but I refuse to read them until I finish at least one book that I am reading for a badge!

Lol Shannon, I don't think we were in danger of a debate breaking out!

I'm still trying to finish The Broken Way. I also have a book from the Library called The Hands On Home: A Seasonal Guide to Cooking, Preserving and Natural Homekeeping. That really isn't a read cover to cover book though. More of a get ideas from book. There is a recipe in there for shampoo that I really want to try. There are quite a few things I'd have to buy for it though, so I haven't done it yet. I'm also still reading Dune. Very slowly. I was just talking to a friend of mine about how I used to read so much before I had this baby and now it's so difficult. Give me a couple years I'll be back at it.

Erin - There are times I have to remind myself that this forum is able to be read by anyone!!! I get so comfortable with you guys that I lose sight that there may be other readers... And I don't know where they stand. If they only read a certain version - one that I "disagree" with, I would never want to discourage them from reading, especially if that is the only relationship or connection they have with God at this point. Anyways... Are you struggling with "The Broken Way" due to lack of time or a lack of interest? My oldest has a goal this year to read 100 books... she has read over 30 so far... and it is only a little over two months in!!! Oh to have that much time!!! And I'm talking "real reading" such as Les Miserables, Shirley, Villette, Pygmallion, etc. It helps that some of those were for her Literature course, but the child just LOVES to read. I am/was the same way, but I just do not have enough hours in the day!!!

Seriously. I wish I could just read all day! So, I re-read my previous comment and just so we're all clear, when I say "this baby" I don't mean it like "ugh.. this baby." I call him this baby all the time but it's more like "*squeal* this baby!" and then I kiss him all over. It kind of sounded like I was sick of my baby. I'm not. He's the best and cutest baby ever! :)

I truly never it read it that way Erin! I think with all of us being mommas, we have all been there!!! I didn't do ANYTHING until Emi was about 9-10 months with her screaming ALL. THE. TIME!!! I still kick myself for not realizing it was a dairy issue... I think it was me hoping it wasn't!!! Watching her now, fat, healthy, and full of laughs and energy, it almost makes me forget how difficult those first numerous months were!!!

My reading list at the moment is
My Daily reading from Language of Letting Go by Melody Beattie
What Falls from the Sky by Esther Emery
Listening to The Queen's Poisoner (Kingfountain, #1) by Jeff Wheeler

I also blogged about my reading and how I discovered Esther Emery. I highly highly recommend checking out her youtube channel and book.
She has a series she started this year that is called Skill of the Month and it is perfect for us farmgirls!!

Sounds very interesting! I'll definitely check it out. Is The Queen's Poisoner fantasy, sci-fi or historical fiction? Just wondering. Sounds intriguing.

It is a Sci-fi Fantasy story. I feel it has a historical flair, and includes a childhood romance. It is very fascinating read/listen. I have been listening to it while stitching. I already purchased the rest of the series.

I Found this in a review at amazon...While the similar historical sources may make some readers think of Kingfountain as a kinder and gentler Game of Thrones. I thought that might give a good idea of the type of read it is.

Bridge - sounds like you have multiple books going at once. I am bad about that!!! It drives my hubby nuts!!!

I generally cannot get into much sci-fi, but I thoroughly enjoy Historical Christian literature. That is probably why I enjoy Janette Oke so much!

I liked Game of Thrones, but I think I would really like a kinder, gentler version even more. I'll have to check it out!

I just got caught up on what all of you are reading! I was going to ask you girls about The Shack...and there was an entire conversation about it haha! We had a guy ask last week at our Catechism study about it. He'd read the book and just went to see them movie. Our priest had never heard of it.....the man stays so busy with work I can see why it was probably off of his radar. When we told him that God was portrayed by a black woman, his eyebrows went up a ways...haha! I have friends that refuse to see the movie, which is out now where I live, because of the heresy in it. There was a short program on tv the other night with the author of the book and scenes from the movie. I recorded it but haven't watched it yet. I was curious as to what this guy was like and what he was trying to say about it. I'm not sure if I'll see the movie. At this point, I think the author was trying to impress upon others God's love for us...but so many other things just aren't right. I'd hate to see readers get really led astray.

I followed the recommendation of one of the farmgirls in the herbal section of the forum and purchased the book Back to Eden. Do any of you have that book? I've been reading it, and I think it's so interesting. There is a lot of good information in there about natural diet and healing. I also got the cookbook that goes with it and another small cookbook called Of These Ye May Freely Eat. They are vegan cookbooks. I'm so far from being vegan, but I see the advantage of plant based diets and wouldn't mind incorporating more recipes like that into my diet. All three books were I think around $16 on amazon.

Those sound interesting. I could never be vegetarian but you can certainly incorporate those meals in with your daily diet, just adding some animal protein. I'll have to add them to my "things to check out on Amazon list".

I'm reading it right now and LOVING it. I think it's a reading requirement for the INT Know Your Food badge. I'd be happy to send you my copy if you'd like. I should be done with it in the next couple of weeks. You can have it, I won't need it back.

I read a Michael Pollan book years ago, but I don't remember which one. I don't think it was that one but it might have been. It was before I had kids, so goodness knows I can't remember! I've listened to him on the radio before too, and he's always very interesting.
