I just thought I would continue Julie's original cooking thread.
I was perusing older threads and thought - "hum ... I wonder why this one just sort of died out? So much cooking going on during the holidays! I loved this thread!
With Amy's marvelous recipe swap, perhaps we can post our attempts reproducing the recipes we receive. Just a thought!
Unfortunately, nothing is cooking at my house tonight. I'm going out to eat with friends. We're going to Anthony's and they have this most amazing 5 pepper sauce served on a slab of beast! lol I'm a pepper girl, the kind you grind! ;o)
Catch you later!

We had Vegetarian Spaghetti last night and our daughter, Holly ate with us when she came to pick up Lily June. I am going to dig out my 30 day cake recipe. I wanted to do it at Christmas, but time got away!. You have probably heard of it or have it. Using a gallon Glasss jar, your start with I think fruit cocktail and sugar and you add every so many days and stir. it makes the best cake, needs no frosting! It makes like 4 cakes. then you can start over with the juice that you strain off. can be stored in the ice box for a month. I got this recipe 30 years ago from a lady who got her hair done at our salon. She was a fabulous cook and would always bring us food and the recipe! I will post the recipe here later today when I find it! LOL!

Amish friendship bread, I had that one year and had so much to share I finally stopped because I couldn't give it away because everyone else was growing it as well.

That is why I don't do it much anymore.
Supper out tonight and most meals while we are here for the wedding. Snow on the ground but roads are clear. Hoping the same for the drive back. |

Connie,
That cake sounds delish! Four cakes would be enough to host all of us! I'll bring the tea!
The "Amish" cake sharing that was going on around here I don't think was original. It asked for a boxed cake mix! I don't think the Amish would buy boxed cake to start a mix! |

I have made a cake using a started that started with fruit cocktail. And every 7 day for 7 days you had to add something or stir, then after a week you had to take 4 individual cups out, add something to what was left to make a cake, give three of the starters to friends, and so on and so forth. I ran out of friends soon, because it multiplies. LOL! Made a delicious cake, though. |

We are having a favorite standby tonight. Boneless porkchops wrapped in bacon and baked with a glaze of apricot jam. Scalloped potatoes, corn and a raspberry dessert. The best part is it is all made from scratch and most of the ingredients were grown here on the farm. I love following "grow what you eat and eat what you grow".

The best food taste is grown on the farm I think. |

Well be having orecchiette with chick peas, red peppers and sun-dried tomatoes tonight. Some nice bread and a green salad will round things out. I don't make dessert most nights, I'm curious, do you girls make desserts every nigh t? |

We only make a dessert about once or twice a month, much to my children's dismay. This month, we made a birthday cake :)
Tonight is pizza for dinner. We are heading to the zoo that is about 1.5hours away, so after we get home, we will pull them out of the freezer for dinner :) |

Amy, what is orecchiette, It is new to me. Julie I fixed pork chops, wrapped in bacon with apricot glaze. Oh my that is good. My son really enjoyed it. He praised it several times. I also fixed chicken wings, marinated in grill mates chipotle seasoning for two hours them baked. They were good, not hot. My family has Sunday dinner at our house, and I am expected to have a dessert. Yesterday it was a white cake with strawberries, whipped cream and more strawberries on top. Yum. I had some strawberries in the freezer and added some from my can of freeze dried strawberries. No one noticed. |

Linda, The last time I made that I ended up putting 3 of the packages in the freezer! So I have lots of starter.
Julie, Those pork chops sound yummy!
So does that cake Marilyn.
Not sure what is on the menu tonight. I think it may be short ribs with some type of glaze or sauce. Definitely a green salad and hot veggie. We don't usually do dessert but there is some peach cobbler left that was made while we were gone. You would think living with a pastry Chef there would be dessert everyday. |

Oricchiette is just a pasta shape, it means "little ears" in Italian. They are kind of like little scoop shapes, and one of my favorites. Last night we had soup I threw together with some corn and lima beans that had to be used up. It turned out to be really good, I was surprised! |

Sounds yummy Amy! I love pasta. I actually make my own pasta. There is such a difference between boxed pasta and fresh made pasta. It's really no trouble especially with the attachment for my Kitchenaid! |

You're right Carole homemade pasta is the best!
Tonight menu is soup. I am using some leftover ham and threw in some veggies. Some beans to thicken it up a bit. Going to add some homemade whole wheat bread. Love a good comfort food when it is so cold outside. |

Thanks for educating me about the pasta. You are making me hungry. It is cloudy and windy today, 46 degrees but feels much colder. The house is ok but not as warm as I like. Maybe we need a fire in the Wood stove. |

I like to make this with salmon Shannon.
Maple Salmon 1/4 cup maple syrup 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 pound salmon
In a small bowl, mix the maple syrup, soy sauce, garlic, garlic salt, and pepper. Place salmon in a shallow glass baking dish, and coat with the maple syrup mixture. Cover the dish, and marinate salmon in the refrigerator 30 minutes, turning once. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Place the baking dish in the preheated oven, and bake salmon uncovered 20 minutes, or until easily flaked with a fork. |
