Carole we have 430 acres of sunflowers. I am not able to post a picture, but took one last week when they were in full bloom that is beautiful. We do get a lot of bird deprivation if we are not on top of it. We use noise cannons that go off every 10 minutes, they need to be moved every other day or the blackbirds get used to them. We also use pistols that shoot a screaming whistle into thier flocks to scare them away. Riding 4 wheeler around sunflower fields several times a day to do bird patrol s part of my life right now.

The benefit was a huge success yesterday, with several thousand dollars being raised. I love the creativity of some of the donations. I came home with a basket of homemade cleaning products and 8 hours of housecleaning service offered my a young mom of our community. I am pretty excited about that and will have her over right before the holidays. My husband bought a delicious turtle cheesecake that came with coupons for a cheesecake or pie for 12 months. Several teenagers auctioned themselves off for 8 hours labor, we won 2 and they will help us cut, haul and stack our wood supply when it is time. I almost had the bid on a gorgeous quilt kit, donated by a very special friend, but turned my back to answer a question at the last minute and was overbid by 10.00 final price on that was $202, so things went well.

Yes Carole there was pickled beets in those baskets, we love those too.

Take care everyone, it is a day of yard work, garden weeding and canning here.

Hugs
Julie

Hi dear friends! When I read all that everyone is doing I'm amazed by the women power we have in this henhouse!

Winnie, removing wallpaper -- oh brother what a job! I went through that when I bought my little house. If not for the profound ugliness of that wallpaper, I'd have given up. Glad you got through it. I didn't know you had your eye on a downsizing house. How exciting!

Carole, isn't it great that they have so many online education opportunities? When I went back to school for my certification to work with the elderly, it was mostly online. Sorry about your pool-- is hubby still in the doghouse?:)

Darlene I loved hearing about your dragonfly rescue. They are so beautiful, as an artist I'm sure you love all their colors. Glad to hear you're not currently in threat from a fire, and hope you do get some downtime. We all need some now and again.

Julie, the dinner and auction sound like it was so much fun. It's great that you won yourself some helpers! Hope you can get a picture of the sunflower, and I loved reading about how you scared off the birds!

Denise, I hope to find the right person to look after mom once a week. She fell again today, practically right under my nose, trying to carry a laundry basket, which she's not supposed to do! Thank goodness it was on the soft grass and she doesn't appear to be hurt. Between her and Lily I go cock-eyed trying to watch them both! They are my blessings, though. You should have seen Lily checking her "RaRa" over with her doctor kit and administering bandaids!

Have a peaceful evening, all!

Happy Day!

Julie, that is a lot of sunflowers! I bet it must be gorgeous! Looks like the fund raiser was a hit! Some of the items auctioned were amazing like that cheesecake! Oh and the cleaning ..... never mind the hired help! So wonderful to see people come together like that. Sounds like you have a wonderful community. A blessing! Makes me want to move to your neck of the woods! lol

Amy, indeed it is wonderful to have access to online classes. I can do them from the comfort of my home! What a cute visual I have of Lily checking over her grandmama! Precious!

Today Pumpkin and I took a ride to Burlington. I did have plans of enjoying my breakfast outside, read a bit and vegge a bit but ..... our next door neighbor decided to have his cedar hedge trimmed. I just didn't feel comfortable sitting outside, eating my breakfast while I watched the work while listening to loud chainsaw like noise. So off we went! Gorgeous day out! Very hot!

Julie I bet those sunflowers are beautiful, I went to Ferndale to get my medicine today and there was a fence line that had blooming sunflowers. It was really pretty. I imagine your field is gorgeous when all in bloom.

Sounds like you had a good day with Pumpkin anyway. Time well spent.
Online classes help a lot when you can't get to the College.

I like pickled beets and home made are the best. We have them at Church once in a while and the best pickled green beans too!

Darlene, indeed it was fun. Returned home and the edge looks great!

Everyone in the west, please know that you are in my thoughts. Goodness, it's horrible out there between fires, tornadoes and heat waves. We are experiencing some hot weather here, but that's okay! Just wish the humidity wasn't so high. The pool is gone so it's not like I'll be able to take a dip.

Amy, DH is still not fully out of the dog house. lol Let's just say that walking around the house with muddy shoes this morning didn't help his cause!

Take care everyone. Cheers!

The sunflowers last week
Horaay, Brian finally got the picture upload do hickey fixed! Baking zuchinni bread here this afternoon, just made a batch of salsa and want to start on a large batch of breakfast burritos. I make large batches of burritos and egg and ham english muffins, wrap them individually and freeze. Than it is just a quick grab, heat and out the door breakfast when we need them. Also making 2 pans of lasagna. One for supper and one the freezer.

These were my tractor buddies last week, their dad was helping us combine so our daughter brought Popsicles out to all of us, of course Maddie and Oliver had to join me and Kylee went with grandpa to empty one of the semi's.

A little rain can straighten a flower stem. A little love can change a life.

I once did a recipe book for the sunflower grower's association in Minnesota. We used them in all kinds of stuff. Your fields are awesome.

Gorgeous, but the children are even more beautiful! I love seeing pictures of my henhouse sisters and their kin.

I'm very upset by a news story from the very-close-by city of Wilmington. A 10-year-old little boy was shot in the head in his own home by some kind of intruder. The poor little boy is in critical condition. They caught the guy who did the shooting but there's no details yet about why. Wilmington has been riddled with gun violence lately, and they think it's gang related drug stuff coming out of nearby larger cities like Philadelphia and Washington D.C. This news story really upset me, I mean can you imagine anyone shooting a little boy like that! My little town is quiet and pretty safe, but Wilmington is 15 minutes away-- my address was Wilmington until not too long ago when we got our own post office. It's really scary.

Happy Day!

Julie, your sunflower photo is magnificent! Wow, such beauty!! Love the fun tractor photos as well.

Amy, it is terribly scary when violence erupts not far from your town. Guns in the wrong hands are killing innocent people across our nation everyday. It is tragic and sad to see our cities and towns decline and innocent people gunned down.

Julie,
Those are some gorgeous sunflowers. Looks like sunshine!
Love that photo of you and those cutie pies.

Amy,
I know what you mean, it is scary! We have shootings in the little town near us. Not very often but still crime is everywhere.

Just got back from taking dad to his dr. appt. He has gout so the nurse gave him a shot and he got a prescription. I'll have to run pick that up later. He also renewed all his meds so hoping that nothing else comes up and we will be good till October when he goes to the cardiologist.

Kinda of feeling a bit tired today so I think I may take a morning nap.

Thanks Darlene and Winnie. My nap never happened. Made a call to my youngest daughter and it turned into a gabfest of sorts. I hadn't talked to her in a couple weeks so I guess we were due. I figure I'll just go to bed early tonight.

Oh gosh, Darlene, that's gorgeous! We had a picture perfect no humidity day yesterday, with a refreshing breeze. You can almost smell fall in the air! I say "almost" because the humidity and temperature are already supposed to creep on back tomorrow:( Mom and I had a rare free day yesterday and took advantage of it by spending most of it on the screen porch. We chatted, she read her book, and I learned how to knit with four double point needles. It was delightful! Growing up we practically lived on the screen porch in the summer, so its one of my favorite summertime places to be. My brother and sister-in-law were here for a visit this week. They are lots of fun, and come here with all the crazy energy of New York City. So it's always a fun visit, but exhausting! Today I'm getting together with my friend of 60 years who is interested in learning more about MJF. I'm excited! By the way, the little boy who was shot is holding his own in the hospital. As awful as it is, his shooting may finally be the vehicle that galvanizes the city into doing something about this violence.

Denise, hope your dad has good health for awhile, I know how hard it is to keep up with the doctor's appointments and medications!

Winnie, are you counting down to Apple season?!?

Carole, when does your dear daughter start school?

Have a great Sunday, everyone!

Happy Day!

Darlene, the picture is beautiful!

Amy, sitting on the porch sounds like a lovely way to spend the day.

Dad still has swelling in his foot. Like most people as soon as he feels better he does things he shouldn't. He will be 90 on the 2nd of September. I am grateful for each day.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday!

Darlene, I love, love that fall photo you shared! October is probably my favorite month of the year too. It is just so lovely with the colors and smells and weather changes.

Denise, how wonderful that your Dad is 90! He has been blessed with such a long life. I hope the doctors are able to keep him comfortable for many good days coming up!

Amy, You betcha I am counting the days till September!

Hey, everyone, I see where Blue Ridge, Ga, which is close to our Farm sister,Sweettea, is going to have some nights in the mid 50s and days in the low 80s at the beginning of the week!! Whoop!! I wish I was up there visiting her and we could drive over to the apple orchard together!!

Today , we have some friends over for a light lunch and really enjoyed getting together and sharing a meal. It has been awhile since we have done something like this and it was great fun. Plus, my friend volunteered to make this to die for apple walnut bundt cake for the occasion. Yes, It was out of this world! Full of chopped apples, walnuts, spices and a milk glaze on top. She also let me keep a wedge for us to enjoy. Guess what I am having for breakfast tomorrow with my coffee!!! Yay!!!!

Yes Denise you are right, Ruth is in Georgia and Sherry (sweet tea) is in Texas.

We have had a few days in the mid 60's and tonight it is supposed to be down to 43. I have even noticed the leaves are starting to change. Fall will be here soon and winter not far behind that.

We spent the day at our oldest grandsons high school rodeo. It is so fun to watch these kids in thier events.
