Girls, did you know you can have a heart attack and never know it until your doctor does an EKG? It has happened to me. Probably in early February when I was dealing with a two month long upper respiratory infection. I was so sick, I never knew. The doctor said a scar or scab shows up on the EKG. Next Wednesday afternoon I will do a nuclear stress test. Then we will know more. I just thought you might need to know that sometimes it is silent, not like in men. My symptoms are decreased energy, rest stops needed frequently and difficulty breathing in hot humid Texas weather. Who would have thought!!!!!!!

Oh Marilyn I am keeping you in my prayers. I have always heard the phrase, a heart attack is the silent killer among women. This hot weather is horrible. I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers my sweet hen friend.

Thanks ladies. I know God is in control. He has been so good to me, allowing me many years here. I am praying for restored health without fear. I have two close friends, man and wife who are living with hearts that gave both a scare. But with meds and good living they are enjoying their grandkids.

Marilyn, I hope your testing next week does not show a previous heart attack. It is very true that women do not always display the same symptoms of heart attack as men. Here is a link below from the American Heart Association that I encourage everyone to read and learn more. Death by heart attack is a bigger killer than all cancers combined and quite often we have symptoms of impending trouble but do not understand that they may be heart related. As we age, it is very important that we are getting regular medical check up with a family doctor who can screen for high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and other related cardiac issues. Management of these problems can often prevent heart attack and stroke. And if you are a smoker, please get help from your doctor to quit for good. Nothing hurts your heart and lungs more than cigarettes. There are new medications that can help you quit and many areas also have wonderful support groups to help in the process of stopping.

http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/Conditions/HeartAttack/WarningSignsofaHeartAttack/Heart-Attack-Symptoms-in-Women_UCM_436448_Article.jsp

From years of nursing I have seen where people don't go to doctors and their blood pressure becomes out of control until they have a major event like a heart attack or stroke. We have to take good care of our bodies and as we age, and we must make those life style changes that promote heart health. The old recommendations of a heart healthy diet, NO SMOKING, regular exercise, weight control, and taking medications as directed for high blood pressure , diabetes and cholesterol are not negotiable. If we are serious about taking good care of ourselves, it is up to us to do what we can . I believe it all begins with education and learning about our bodies and what is helpful and what is harmful. Then it is up to us to do the hard work of making good heart choices every day and sticking with it. Doctors can help diagnose and treat problems but they cannot make us do the everyday work of healthy living. Our moms were right when they told us to "eat your vegetables" and "an apple a day keeps the doctor away".

Both of my parents died from advanced heart disease and stroke. I had to have open heart surgery to correct a congenital defect in my late 40s. Heart health is always on my mind as I have a lot of negative genetic factors to contend with. But I am committed to doing what my doctors advise and I try every day to do my part. It is not always easy and I do fall off the wagon at times but I make sure that I get right back on and befriend all the green and delicious veggies and fruits while getting exercise most days. If you are not currently thinking about heart healthy living, won't you join me in learning and trying? I could use some Farmgirl Friends on the path!!

Ladies, I went to Fort worth today and had my angiogram/angioplasty and after it was finished the doctor came in. She said I.. did not have a blockage. I did not need a stint. Do you believe in the healing power of God? I always have, and today proved he can heal and remove problems. My heart and arteries are just fine and dandy. Thank you God. I am so excited.
