So my dd asks me to teach my granddaughter to sew. I am happy to do it but I told her it will be more like Home Ec. because I will be teaching her to cook and do some other things too. Today we made a sewing basket for her to keep her things in. She picked out all the materials from what I have available and since she hasn't had much practice with the scissors I did that part. She pretty much did the rest. I thought it was pretty good for her. She will be 8 years old tomorrow. There is lots of glue in places but thankfully it dries clear.

This is what we started with

and this is what she made. As you can see there is still some glue oozing.

Sorry these came out so big. I downsized them but apparently not enough.
hugs,
Denise~~

Fabulous! I love the basket liner, and what a perfect project for an 8 year old. Are you teaching her on a machine?

Denise what a wonderful idea! I can hardly wait until my grand daughters are old enough to do this too.
I love the basket.

Rain~ We are going to start with hand sewing. Learning and practicing some different stitches. I want her to be able to do embroidery also so I will add in what I can. ;)
I am going to teach her on the machine later on. Hopefully we won't have to do it all during this school year. :D
Her birthday is tomorrow and I purchased the different things she will need to put in her basket. We talked about when she gets older getting a machine and bigger basket as her projects become advanced and she acquires more tools.
She is a sweetie and minds me well. She likes to stay over so I always have that leverage. Her mom needs the pictures for her records so it works out well. Hopefully we won't have to photograph everything because we will making some Christmas gifts. ;) As long as her mom can record what she has worked on.

hugs,
Denise~~

Really nice Denise wish I were there so you could teach me along with your granddaughter. I love the basket you made and especially the cover.
Have fun and enjoy.

Debbie, I would love to have you join us if you could. I will try and post pictures of the projects we do together. Next time we are going to make some baked goods for the freezer. I want her to start learning measurements. In cooking and sewing.

It's a funny thing. I received the books I am going to be using for her and the first thing it said should be done is to make or get some type of box or basket to keep the sewing tools in. So I guess we can move on this week.

I love the fact that you are not only teaching her great skills, but spending memorable time with her is priceless. Loved the basket she did, awesome job!
I didn't know we could post photos :-)

Ruth,
For the pictures I use Photobucket. I upload my pictures to there and then use the IMG setting to copy and insert them here.
She is excited to be able to come every week. She enjoys cooking so I also purchased a book for that too. The books are so cute and very vintage looking pictures. One is called "See and Sew" and the other is "Look and Cook" both by Tina Davis. Here are the links if you want to see.

http://www.amazon.com/Look-Cook-A-Cookbook-Children/dp/1584793589/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380711200&sr=8-1&keywords=cook+and+look

http://www.amazon.com/See-Sew-Sewing-Book-Children/dp/1584794917/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380711316&sr=8-1&keywords=see+and+sew

There is also one for gardening. Maybe we will try that one in the Spring! That's part of Home Ec. isn't it? Growing your own food.

hugs,
Denise~~
