I am ready to get started on these! I just picked the first on the list "Going Green" mostly because that is a direction we have been going in over the past year. And I am out of detergent, lol, so I guess this is as good a time as any to try making my own. My biggest problem is what the heck do I do with all of my old chemical cleaners? I stopped using them months ago. I started using/selling Watkins because I was having bad reactions whenever I would use the chemical cleaners. But I didn't care for their laundry detergent. It just went too fast. I am however, in love with Method laundry soap, if you have never tried it, do so, it's great! But I am going to go look for a good homemade laundry soap to see if I like it better than Method. I'll have to try making my own soap too and see how that works out, lol. As for the all purpose, windows and floors, I love using baking soda and vinegar. I found that baking soda is better at cleaning a grimey oven then easy-off and I don't have to wear gloves. And my mom always used vinegar for cleaning so that's one I have always used. OK, enough talk, gotta go make some detergent so I can do the laundry! :) |

I sooooo chickened out! I didn't make the homemade laundry detergent. I feared the gloppy mess, lol. BUT, I did find a product called GreenShield organic that has Soap Nuts in it! So I am giving that a go! Plus is was 2 dollars cheaper than the Method, for the same amount of loads. |

I've been looking for a good laundry soap. I've been getting 7th generation but it doesn't get the clothes very clean. I'm going to look for the two you mentioned, Jen.
I made up a cleaner for the bathroom from baking soda, Bronner's liquid soap (used the tea tree one for germ fighting) and water. It's working great! An extra bonus is that it keeps the drains clean. I used to have to use the plunger on the sinks at least once a month but now they're all running quickly.
How do you clean your oven with baking soda? Do you just give it a good scrub? I have a really fancy convection oven that blows a fuse every time I clean it. It happened several times when it was under warranty. We tried to get it replaced under the lemon law but the company said that it couldn't be proved there was a flaw. Something else could be causing it to do that. (What!!!????) So now I have a very grungy oven that smells because I won't use chemical cleaners in it. I put baking soda in the bottom, sprayed some water on it and let it sit a while but it didn't work all that great. Plus the sides are still coated in grease.
As for getting rid of old cleaners I can think of two possibilities. You could donate them to a shelter or somewhere that has lots of cleaning to do. Those places are most likely going to be buying chemical cleaners anyway so it might as well be your leftovers. Another option that we have here is a county run drop off that takes chemicals, paints, and other things that shouldn't end up in the landfill. I'm not sure what they do with them. Probably bury them somewhere. :-(

Those are both good suggestions for disposal Kathy, thanks! Also I found both the Method and the GreenShield at Lowes, although I do think Target might carry the Method as well.
For doing the oven, I just make a paste with baking soda and water and let it set for awhile, then I get in there and scrub like crazy. For greasy build up maybe use a paste with baking soda, water and Dawn. I use dawn to clean the hood above the stove when it gets greasy build up. I use to have a glasstop stove and would use the baking soda on that as well. |
