This summer I am returning to a plan I used to have:to take the summer months and learn something new. One year it was breadmaking, one year learning to make jelly. But I kinda fell away these past couple of years.
This summer I am going to learn more about either embroidery or tatting. Both interest me a lot, I just need to choose one to focus on. I have tons of thread from my cross-stitching days for the embroidery so I won't need any new thread for that for a while. I would try needle tatting so I only need small supplies for that.
I'll let you know which one I pick!
Are you learning any new craft this summer?

That's a great idea! I'm going to learn to make soap this summer. My sister makes it & she's helping me learn.

Soapmaking sounds fun! There are some videos I want to start collecting called Homestead Blessings and each one is a lady and her daughters showing how to do a craft or something for the homestead. They have one on soapmaking.

After thinking on it,I will be learning embroidery for my summer project.

I know about those videos! They look great, although I haven't bought any. I should probably get the one on soapmaking. I'm such a visual learner & my sister lives 10 hours away. So she can talk me through it, but she can't *show* me. And I'm a bit nervous about working with lye.

I ordered my first one a couple of days ago. It's on quilting. I think I'll enjoy learning the basics of quilting with that DVD so when I am ready to try my hand at quilting, I'll know how to do it. I'm a visual learner too, so this seems a good way for me to learn quilting as well as a few other crafts in the series.
I wonder if the library can get these DVDs? I'm going to ask next time I'm in there.

Ooh, good idea about the library, Caron! I'll do the same thing.

Yesterday I decided to learn something else as well. The roses are blooming like crazy, so I picked a bunch and I'm going to try my hand at some recipes: jelly, vinaigrette, etc. Should be fun!

Well, it's August and here is an update on my summer project of embroidery or tatting: I haven't done either. Sheesh! But I DID get involved in a good summer Bible study so it hasn't been a total waste. And I DID do some mending and such on some of my hubbys clothes (that counts as needle work, right?)LOL!

How have your summer projects been going?

Well, I did learn to make soap at my sister's house! And I've made a batch here at home. So now I have lots of soap and don't need to make any for quite some time!

I also made a rose petal/vinegar hair rinse. It's a beautiful red color and is great for removing shampoo build-up.

Now my project is to survive this heat. Whew!

I mean! Isn't this heat something? My hubby had to go into an attic to repair something (he works as a handyman) and was there only 10 minutes but said he felt "funny" the whole rest of the day. I told him no more attics unless he goes in one at nighttime when it's cooler!

Congratulations on the soapmaking! Now you have a new skill you can use!
My thought is I like knowing I can do something. Even if I only do it once in a while, I can say I know how to do it in case I need to. Each time I learn a new craft or skill of some kind it makes me feel good and a little more self-sufficent.
