What do you use to keep mosquitoes off of you? I really hate to use bug spray but they eat my baby alive! They will even swarm him when he's only been outside for a minute. My neighbor listed off a bunch of things I could try but before I go and purchase all these things just to try, I was wondering if anyone has any natural mosquitoe repellents that really work?

Buzz Away by Quantum Health is safe for babies and toddler because it is Deet free. Of course you will want to check with your pediatrician to make sure you use the right thing for your little one. Good luck finding a way to keep him safe.

I use Buzz Away while working at the arboretum in the woods and it does a great job. Other gardeners have borrowed it from me and are all impressed with the results.

Thanks Dawn for the tip. I have been wanting a natural repellent so I can sit outside without being carried away by mosquitoes. I found it on Amazon and ordered it. There is a 25% coupon which is a good thing.

I grow lemon basil for cooking but rub it on your arms etc. and it will keep the pesty things away. Also lavender and peppermint. They all seem to work.

Hi Krista,
Skeeters just love me but leave Hubby alone. I like natural homemade products but I couldn't find the recipe I used which included lavender. While looking for it on You Tube I found this easy fix. I am going to try it myself. I hope it works for you if you try it. It only takes a bar of Irish Spring soap a grater and a jar.

My master gardener teacher taught me that the leaves of a beauty berry bush were a perfect mosquitoe repellent. I tried it and found it to be true. And just recently I read that lemon balm leaves also make a great repellent.i haven't tried it although I do have it in abundance. My issue is that I needed more that a mosquitoe repellent! I need to keep the gnats AND biting flies away too so I use lemongrass oil in a carrier base and nothing bothers me as long as I'm outside! I love it, the hubs does not!! :)

I have concocted a blend or e.o. of peppermint and lavender ( 20 drops of each E.O.) and use almond oil, about 6oz, as the base, but have also used plain distilled water for a quick spritz.
It works well for my hubby who happens to be a Smorgasbord for skeeters!

There are certain scents of Geraniums that work well too!

Every one has a different body chemistry, so have fun creating the perfect bug repellent.

Thank you Dawn and Sara. I will look it up.

Thank you Laurie. I don't grow any of that in my garden, So I would need to purchase some. Sounds like I really need to add some new things to my garden next year.

Nancy, Bexten and I are the same way. They will leave my husband alone and only bother the other kids occasionally but attack us. Let me know how your new fix is.

Dianna, why does your hubby not like it? That sounds like a simple product to make.

Grace, I was thinking of making something along those lines. I don't own any essential oils, so I would be starting brand new. Last year we tried the citronella geranium in some pots and then would rub the leaves before heading into the garden. I feel like it didn't work that great. That's why I am continuing to look for new ideas.

Thanks for the link Nancy. I had no idea that soap had that many uses. I have actually never used Irish Springs soap, so I have no clue what it even smells like.

Dianna, that is funny. I have been looking today at ordering some essential oils. I am trying to narrow down my list to the ones I really need the most first and lemongrass is on my list.

Hi Krista
I found two bars of Irish Spring in my towel closet so I am going to test it out. Hope it works because the stinging bugs down here in Texas are as big as hummingbirds.

Nancy, I hope it works out for you! I am sorry your bugs are so huge. I wish they just left us alone.

I placed an order for some essential oils. They should be here next week and I will get my own bug spray made up. I will let you know how well it works on Bexten and the rest of the family.

Krista, my poor hubby is a mosquito magnet, me,, they run from ;>) I guess I am just not as 'sweet' !! loil!

The mint/lavender concoction works for him,, but everyone's body chemistry is different, so you might have to 'play' with the E.O. recipe.

Now if only the concoction worked on repelling grasshoppers!!!! lol!

Grace, I did read that peppermint oil will help keep grasshoppers away. I am not sure if it really works because I have never tried it. Maybe give it a try and see if it does anything.

Grace, you must be sending your grasshoppers my way lol! We found a huge one in the garden last night. I am hoping he was a single fella, but I am sure I am wrong. We will see when I check on my garden tonight.

OOPS! Sorry Krista,,, I will tell the other 'hoppers' to go far North... to Alaska! lol!

Oh and fyi, I just read an article where some people said they use vicks type menthol rub to ward off skeeters!
One person said she melts it, adds a bit of water and then spritzes it on her to ward them off, several others posted they just rub it around their neck, ears and arms...
I guess skeeters don't have stuffie noses thus do not like menthol nor eucalyptus...

YEAH IT WORKS !!!

I bought this plastic drink jar for a dollar and grated a whole bar of Irish Spring "ORIGINAL" scent soap into it. I placed it under my side table as you can see on my back porch. The wasps just LOVE this table. Well while drinking my first cup of AM energy I noticed the peskys trying to land but then made a fast retreat. If it looses it scent I will replace and put the shavings in a nylon stocking and use it in the shower.

Grace, so far he was a single fella. Ha ha that's funny! I guess they don't get stuffy noses!

Nancy, that is awesome! I am glad it's working. I was just talking with my hubby this week about trying it out for the flies to help with the calves. I was thinking about rubbing it along the fence bars and on their shelter to see if it will help keep the flies down.
