Yesterday my niece gifted me a large pot of beautiful dahlias. They're orange with yellow in the center. I've never had dahlias so I will have to read up on how to care for me. I put them between the two tubs of garlic. Now I have color there besides the blooming sage. The zinnias and other flowering plants are only an inch tall, so I have a way to go before I have more color in my raised beds. Next fall I would like to put the dahlia in the ground, but my yard gets shadier every year and the only sunny spot is where the raised beds are. Well, I got between now and then to come up with a plan.

Good morning Sara!! I love my dahlias and grow them every year in their own designated spot!! I have been reading and taking free classes at Florence to learn about my dahlias and grow them successfully. Here is a website you can join and access thier library to help you! All the best! Thanks Dianna, I checked the website out. Beautiful picture and words.

Do your dahlias winter over in the ground?

Yes, Sara. They do but just after my last freeze I dig them up, separate them and replant. I may lose a few but gain more.:) enjoy!!

Thanks Dianna, we do have similar weather if not exactly the same. Now all I have to do is find that sunny spot by fall. My backyard is in total shade so is the front yard most of the day. Where there is a will there's always a way so surely, I can find a sunny spot for one lone dahlia.

Still to cold over here,,for direct in ground gardening.
Not sure I will do much this year.. but I have been out in my garden 3 times so far,, and my Gooseberry, currents are popping up and I see my chocolate mint is popping up.. oh, and the strawberry plants are doing great..
Not sure if or what I want to plant, I want to do some traveling this summer and have no one to take care of my garden while we are gone,, is I will have to do some thinking..

I totally get it Grace! If its not the animals, its the garden tying us down. Was seriously thinking the same, not planting food but just flowers. Ended up planting both so we shall see. I am taking one week in June tho! Its been unusual weather for us here and seeding in ground is coming up slowly. I'm like, you know what? Whatever will be will be. NOT stressing like I did last year. I say, stock up on some MJ freeze-dried foods and enjoy your summer!! :)

Ground & trees once again snow-covered here in N MI! Some of my little seedlings, upon peeking over the windowsill at the landscape, immediately pushed their tiny “heads” back into the soil “Hunker down, guys & gals, so she doesn’t see you & plant you out there”! “Brrr . . . “

After a week of summer temps in April here in the Chicago area May has had a chilly start. I am hoping to start planting as early as next week. They show 70's for the days and 50's at night. Hopefully we are done with the 30's for the rest of the season.

LOL!

My onions are looking good and a few radishes are coming up. Oh, and I'm happy to say my lemon balm survived the winter and is looking good. I wasn't sure if it came back or not. Chives are getting ready to open their pretty purple flowers. Hopefully the peas, beets, and carrots will make an appearance soon :)

Always amazes me the different stages everyones gardens are in. Some have planted, and some getting ready to harvest. Here is WI we are too wet to do anything. It is plenty early too for us. My daffodils are just getting ready to open. The fields are still sopping wet.

That is funny Dianna!

Michele, I feel the same way. It's also interesting the different types of stuff people can plant and what others can't. I can't tell you how much I wish I could grow pineapple! But I am happy with what I can grow.
