Good afternoon everyone,
I see that Bunny and Marianne are having some interesting weather. Do you have hurricanes on the west coast? Do you have hurricanes on the Pacific? I thought they were typhoons. I find the sound of the rain on our metal roof soothing. I hope your road does not get washed out, Marianne.
Gypsy a while ago you asked for our stuffing recipe. We do not really follow a specific one. We use broken up old bread, a couple of apples, eggs, celery, onions and garlic and some herbs. It depends on what is available in the house.
I am boiling down the last of the pumpkins to freeze and make into pie. Now I do not have to worry about them rotting in my kitchen.
We do not have the Tahoe back yet. We told them to take their time and fix it right. New transmission will fix the problem and I do not know how long it takes to remove the broken one and put in the new one.
Right now the freezers are dedicated to each type of meat. We are not always so organized but by the time I have dug through them looking for what I want I know where everything is.
Another lovely day here in the Green Mountains. Temperatures in the high thirties and sunny for the most part. I wonder how the west coast weather will affect us in a couple of weeks. Maybe snow?

My grandmother's secret to cornbread dressing was chopped onions (about 2 cups) lightly sauteed in real butter then added to the cornbread mix. along with the celery and other seasonings. If it seemed too dry she would add a can of cream of chicken or mushroom soup not diluted.

No, we don't get hurricanes here in the west. The comparison for this last storm was because of the intense winds. We haven't had a bunch of breaks in the rain. There is some flooding, a few mudslides, avalanches in the mountains and standing water everywhere!! Thanksgiving we are due for a break. Our driveway is muddy. The horses' paddocks are ugly! But, considering what others have lived through in the last few years weatherwise, my complaining is over.
Holly, I am not surprised you have a certain degree of organization to your freezer. My pumpkin crop failed this year. Much to my, the dogs' and the horses' dismay. We all enjoy the pumpkin. Enjoy yours. How many pies do you make?
Gypsy, you sound quite excited about Thanksgiving. It is lots of fun to host such a holiday when you really want to! I'm sure we have all had our years of dragging through a large meal for guests who may not be deserving of the amount of effort we had put into it! But, I sure hope your dinner goes well! My folks always had a to-do list for my husband. As soon as we hit the door, my mom would start in, "Mike, I hate to ask you ...." I did feel bad for him because he ended up installing four extra phone lines for them, as well as auxiliary speakers for their tv, burying pets, just any slightly or very distasteful chore you can think of! Eggnog and whisky would have gone a long way!! Here's my crazy advice about Mr. Not-a-Goober ... enjoy every little tummy flip and cynical aside, everytime you find one more thing in common and anytime you feel understood for the first time. And don't waste one minute wondering if anyone is thinking you are being foolish. But, what do I know...
The secret to my stuffing is Bell's Seasoning! Looking forward to having it at Christmas.
Guess we won't hear from Jan until about the middle of next week! She is going to be so busy with the craft sale.
Linda, we might get some snow next week, too. It is supposed to get cold and it is certainly time for us to have some snow. And for this mud to freeze.
So my sewing machine has the place of honor on the kitchen table. I am decorating some towels for christmas. Also need to get some ironing done, but so far have only done the house cleaning as well as stripping some more lavendar buds. A while ago someone asked what I meant by saying I saved the lavendar stems for firestarters. All I do is bundle them and tie them with yarn or yardage strips. It smells wonderful and burns more slowly than paper.
MIL says she is about 50% better from her fall. Unfortunately, her diabetic brother was hospitalized today with an issue with his leg to foot. She is very worried about him naturally.
Mollie foot sore is just about healed. I was so relieved to see her not limping as badly this morning. Mollie is my old lab.
Hope everyone has time to check in here and there over the holiday. Have a lovely holiday with the important people in your lives. Remember that you are important in mine and that I thank you all for being here.

Good evening everyone,
I posted yesterday but we all must have been on at the same time because so many posts snuck by me.
The only pumpkins we had grow were the ones that Ross had planted the seeds for. In the spring he swiped the seeds as I was planting and tucked one here and one there. I make two pumpkin and will make two apple. For the pie breakfast a few weeks ago I made an apple pie and put an oatmeal crumble on top instead of a top crust. It was very tasty and I have had requests to make the Thanksgiving pies like that.
There was one year that I wrote down each thing I put into the freezers and put it all in a notebook like a checklist. Unfortunately, I was the only one who marked the book when something was taken out of the freezers. I gave that up instead of trying to train the help (children) lol good idea too much effort.
Gypsy have a good time on the single's sights. I am glad you are finding them amusing. No harm in flirting.
It is nice to have Thanksgiving at your house when you have a choice. I think Jan must be overwhelmed with making the meal and getting the craft fair all together. I hope someone else does the dishes at her house. At ours two of the big boys who live elsewhere will be coming and one is a great dishwasher so I am all set.
I spoke to my sister today. She and her husband have been hosting her mother in law for the last three weeks. The mother in law does not like my sister. She told her other son that Jane is mean to her and just thinks so differently she can't help it. Her husband says his mother is jealous of my sister. Jane does not know why. I said because you are tall, smart and pretty. she said I don't know about that. What the mother in law says hurts none the less. I told her about some of your mothers in law. the woman was supposed to go home in two weekends but has demanded to go this weekend so Jane's torment may end sooner than later. the woman is 88 years old and has buried two husbands.
Jan, I hope that you come home with no merchandise. That would sure be wonderful. I saw in Land's End catalog that they had sweater's for wine bottles that looked very similar to the tea cup sweater's you make.
Do any of you remember when I lost my bag of seeds last spring. I found them. lol they were in the garden near the trowel in the weeds. I found them a couple of weeks ago. no brain no pain.

My sister and her hubby are coming from Wenatchee, WA to visit me in Pasco tomorrow. It will be a down and back in one day for them. They have appointments to keep on Friday.
Today I baked a pumpkin pie and a mincemeat pie. Haven't had either in a very long time. Hard to eat a whole pie by yourself--if you know what I mean. I don't need any more pounds on the hips. Turkey turned out to be two breasts and I'm trying a new way of roasting them--upside down for the first part and they will be resting on a rack with veggies underneath. Saw them do it on America's Test Kitchen. Hope those breasts turned out nice and juicy.
Everyone have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I'm grateful for everything I have and that's my thanksgiving.

I wasn't trying to point fingers about missing posts, just wondering if anyone else was having a problem. And while we are on the subject, does it take forever for the Over 50 posts to load for you guys? I was wondering if it had to do with the length (360+ pages). What if we just started a new topic "Over 50 continued"? or am I way off base?
Happy Thanksgiving!! Hope everyone's turkey comes out moist and surrounded by all your favorite dishes and that each of you is surrounded by your favorite people.

Holly, I do remember your lost bag of seeds. You said they would turn up ... Hope your older boys have an easy commute home for the holiday and how nice to have talent at the sink for cleanup! Sounds like Ross saved the day with his Johnny Appleseed Pumpkin planting! Wow, your sister is really hosting her MIL for a long stretch. Sounds like she is an exhausting woman.
Betty, your upside down breast sounds interesting. I don't watch a bunch of cooking shows, but the few times I have seen America's Test Kitchen I have really enjoyed it. They teach you so much more than how to cook a dish. Aren't we glad to have some clear weather for the holiday?!
I have so many things, people and animals to be thankful for this year, as every year. You gals are among the ones I hold dear. I hope you are all happy today.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all. I have been reading all the posts even though I haven't been on in a while.
I have been getting all the Christmas gifts ready to send. I made almost all my gifts this year. I made a promise to myself last year that I was going to make my gifts from now on.
My FIL had a beautiful funeral and most of the family was there...even 2 of the great-grandchildren. My DILs have made good arrangements for the care of my MIL. My DH and I had a good time up there visiting several very, very old cemeteries. Some had head stones with dates in the 1700's. There were 2 or 3 with the name of Delano and Hathaway.
I have my turkey in the oven, the stuffing is made and DH is making the mashed potatoes. We will also have some yams, squash and a green veggie along with a green salad.
My prayers for you all.

Good evening everyone,
The main meal is done and the children are cleaning up so I am staying out of the way. We had a wonderful carbohydrate meal. turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy and rolls. We also had cranberry sauce. Our ds who is 18 washed and peeled the potatoes so they were very white and fluffy. He likes them without skins in the finished product. It does not bother me to eat the skin.
Pies still to eat. I made two apple and two pumpkin.
The man from America's test kitchen lives here in Vermont. We subscribe to the monthly magazine Cook's Illustrated. I have never seen the show. We also get once a year a compilation of recipes. We make one every now and again. Our last adventure was garlicky shrimp over pasta. It was quite delicious.
Today was sunny and warm all day. It was supposed to cloud up later in the day but so far as the sun sets it is still a cloudless sky. Temperatures were in the high forties. We went for a lovely walk across the fields before the main meal.
Nancy I am glad you are well and popped in to say hi. I do miss you. I am glad that you made your goal of making the presents for everyone. especially early enough to mail them out. there are some very old stones in Massachusetts. When I was a child our GS troop went gravestone rubbing in some very old cemeteries.
Penny Have a lovely visit with the children and grands. Nice to see you are well.
Sometimes it takes a long time to post. I type now on a letter form and then copy and paste it to the page to post. I used to type directly on to the page but when it would take a long time to post I would sometimes lose it. so, now if it takes a long time and blips me off I can repost it. We cleaned up the computer a couple of weeks ago and it runs faster now and I have not lost any posts since. I was wondering if we could get say the first 250 posts put into the archive and just have the remainder left on the board. I do not know who has the fortitude or interest in reading all of the pages of posts.

Putting the older posts into the archives is a really good idea. It is taking my computer a long time to finally get onto the page. I am wondering if anyone else has the problem or is it just my "crazy" computer.
Holly, sounds like your feast was really a hit. I can taste those pies and I am wanting pumpkin pie right now and it is so early in the morning.
I ate so much yesterday. I made a good stuffing from a recipe I read in a magazine. It came out so well. My turkey was juicy and delicious, too.

I agree - the thread is slow to load and then takes a long time to get to the end page. Maybe start a new thread not necessarily under Welcome Wagon? My dinner was a success too. I don't cook much any more so you never know. I will share the green bean recipe with anyone who wants it. It's a keeper. fresh beans a little more trouble but so much better than mushy canned ones.

Gypsy I am glad you meal was delicious and appreciated.
Nancy I like to eat pumpkin pie for breakfast. It has many of the important food groups for starting the day in the right manner. lol apple pie was good this morning as well. The pies are all gone now.
the day started out clear and bright. By mid afternoon it was clouding up and now it is raining. I can tell by the drops hitting the top of the garden window in the kitchen. Too dark out to see anything. I remember one warm winter like this is many years ago. It was a disaster for the ski areas. I hope the night temperatures at least stay below freezing so the ski areas can make snow. Many people book their rooms way in advance for ski season I would not want them to be disappointed in the snow or not snow on the mountains.
I hope Jan sold a lot of merchandise today at the craft fair.
This is the last weekend of rifle deer season. No one has taken any off our property so far. Nest there is another muzzle loader season and I am not sure if there is a handicapped week in there as well.
My bees were flying yesterday. I hope they were out getting water to cool themselves off. there certainly is nothing out for them to forage. If the weather is warm they are more likely to go through their honey reserves more quickly. It would be good if the weather would cool down so they would be more sedentary. If I have to feed them to get them through the winter I will.

Wow, Holly I had no idea that bees would still be active and that you would have to feed them. One of those "Never gave it a thought" things. It is really interesting and obviously, makes sense!
We have a group of five deer that we see almost every day. I don't look forward to hunting season because one of them is a five pointer. I would hate to lose him.
Gypsy, I think your friend has a great sense of humor and a healthy mean streak that he used judiciously in this case!! Glad your meal went well.
Spent some time helping dh put studded tires (tap shoes) on the Suburban this morning. Then we hung some outdoor decorations. I even cut the chyrsanthemums down. A bit late, but usually I don't cut those down until spring. Sammie got to retrieve a stick about 47 times which is about 100 times too few in her opinion. Mollie wandered about a bit which made me happy. And the chihuahua came out momentarily and annoyed everyone. Why do we have a small dog? All right, I love her.
Got some great text messages today and yesterday from dd. Yesterday she kept me apprised of her first Thanksgiving preparations. It was just her and her boyfriend. They decided to eat at 5pm. After taking the sink apart midprep, it seems they sat down to dinner at 7. Who hasn't been there? Boyfriend was foolish enough (or brave enough, depending on how you look at it) to mention that the turkey was just a bit dry...
Today they put up their tree. It looks really pretty and it is fun to see some of the ornaments I collected for dd over the years in her home.
Dh wil get to see them on Monday. He will be there on business and it will be two days before Dd's 25th birthday. Wish I could steal away in his luggage!
Oh good, little dog has come to keep me company. Oh, that's right, I love her. I'll tell ya how we ended up with a chihuahua. Nine years ago, we lost our first and best family dog, Sara. She was a chocolate lab. I know you are all surprised to hear we had a labrador. She was a very special dog and had played a very large part in dd's life from age 4 through age 15. It was very painful to lose her and a difficult time in our lives for a few reasons. We already had Mollie. At that time, Mollie was 3. Mollie missed her pal terribly. After several months of being a one dog family, dd asked if she could get another dog. We thought it was a good idea. Dd said she didn't want a dog that would remind her of Sara. Well, this chihuahua would never remind you of an even-tempered, dying to please Labrador in any way, shape or form. But, I love her ... really. But, she isn't a labrador.

Been reading ... so much catching up to do. Glad everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving ... I'm still around. Just haven't had much spare time -- make that spare time with energy. Dinner was great and I sent care packages home with nephew and with his folks (separately) which puts us at the turkey soup stage. I make pretty darn good stuffing, too, if I do say so myself. Since everyone seems to like my ambrosia - I've taken to making it on Thanksgiving as well. I'm also a fan of Alton Brown and watch the program and take the magazine and subscribe to the online access to shows and recipes.
Gypsy - enjoyed your friend's "engagement story" And as for Mr. pitter pat - the boot was the only part of you he deserved.
I've been experiencing the slow loading, too. I'll follow wherever the chronologically gifted girlfriends go.
Off to pack for Maui now, ladies. Stay warm, stay happy and keep smiling. Love you all.

Holly, my mouth is still watering for some pumpkin pie so I think I will make one since I have some pumpkin. I am also going to make some pumpkin bread. I can smell it now. Yum!!
Marianne, my daughter had a little chihuahua for a number of years. She named him Lucky Agent 007. He was a cuddle bug but also stood his ground with my GDs. One thing he could do really well was walk on just his front legs. I still laugh when I remember him walking around with his back end up in the air. He weighed only 2 lbs.
I am busy today with housecleaning and coloring my hair. Those greys keep coming in. :)
Tomorrow I will be having a high tea at a bed and breakfast inn with my DH to celebrate our 25th. Where did all the time go? Still love him like mad.

Good morning everyone. My son, his girl friend and my x are here. It has been so nice and kicked back. They are leaving tonight sometime after midnight. It is a 12 hour drive home. I want to go with them so bad. But I still have work to do here for at least another year.
The transmission in my truck is going out. I don't know what I'm going to do. I have no resources for money right now. Thankfully my mother never goes anywhere so I can use her car until I get a miracle.
The weather has been cloudy but I'm ok with that. It has never bothered me to have lots of rain. Thankfully it should be a pretty easy drive back to CA for my family.
Gypsy, funny about your friends story, I have three to match it. All successful business men out of the country but returning soon. One child, widowed, no parents alive...on and one. Thankfully I had their number pretty quick. Of course I tried to sell them ocean front property in Arizona. Didn't hear much from them after that. I found that most men my age wanted women in their 40's. Men that were interested in me were 20 years older. Just can't date someone old enough to be my dad.
Sounds like everyone had a good holiday. Hopefully everything will go smoothly until Christmas.
Two more weeks of school. It is getting hard to fit everything in. I'm not much good after 6pm for homework. Especially if I have been at it all day anyway. Mostly finals this week. I pick up mom at the airport next Sunday, so at least have a week alone.
Well, everyone is waking up. I need to make monkey bread.

Hello gfs. last of company just hit the road so I am in my bed on my heat pad. My sweet son in law fixed my mower and I mowed what I really needed to, then he showed me how to empty the gas and winterize it, so it is retired til spring. Then they moved all my furniture around. I have been wanting to rearrange forever but could not do it by myself. We have been eating leftovers so I know they were glad to go home and probably get a burger and fries. Marianne, the egg nog and whiskey was a big hit for SIL. You shoud have seen him trying to decide between that and banana pudding last night. funny. Egg nog and whiskey won out. Also, Marianne, I nominate you to fix the thread----. whatever you decide works for me.
Darling Darlys have a blast in Maui. Nancy happy anniversary - you lucky girl!
Bunny, I think I am having the same experience as you regarding the age thing. Most everybody lies about their age by about 10 years but I refuse to do that. I'm not expecting much out of it other than light entertainment while I'm sitting around not watching TV. That one guy really had me going for a couple of days but looking back I realize he was another version of my ex. Smart, sweet, narcissistic, clingy, needy. He got upset when he saw I was on match ("online now" it announces), and he had said he was leaving it because I was the only woman he had found in a month that was intelligent, bla,bla. Of course he had to have been online himself to know I was online.
Kid stuff. well enough of that.

Good evening everyone,
I would tell you all that my brother who is 54 is single but while he is a good worker and handsome he marches to his own drummer and that is often in his own interests. So, I would not recommend him unless you, are rich and want a tall, good looking guy on your arm. lol
It was overcast all day and is now snowing. We have about an inch of snow on the porch.
A chihuahua is certainly not a friendly labrador. Does anything pass by your windows that does not get barked at? You are so nice not to have sent it to live with your dd and her bf in their new apartment.
We have been eating leftovers as well. Usually we make a half turkey but this year there was a whole last year turkey in the freezer so it was cooked. Tonight we had a casserole of mashed potatoes on the bottom with a layer of turkey and then brocolli and then topped with a cheese sauce. It was tasty and used up most of the turkey. I will be glad when it is all gone.
I will go to whatever place there is to move the board too. who ever orchestrates the move should put an ending post that this place is closed and all of the interesting happenings will be elsewhere.
Bunny the days are sliding by until you are done school. next year will arrive quicker than you thought. Hang in there. The hard times will pass. Enough have already.
Darlys have a great time in Hawaii. Enjoy the food and sun.
Nancy, I am going to make banana bread tomorrow. A friend gifted me enough gone by bananas to make a loaf or two. I like pumpkin pie better. Happy Anniversary to you.

It sounds like you had a great visit and holiday, Bunny. It must be very hard to be "left behind" when everyone took off for CA. I hope you enjoy your final week alone before you pick up your mom and that you get lots done. Your break from homework is coming! How great did your monkey bread turn out? That sure sounds good.
Nancy, hope your high tea was fun. It sounds like a special way to celebrate your anniversary. I know what you mean about the grays coming in. I just gave up the fight and waved the white flag maybe six years ago.
Darlys, have a safe trip. Enjoy your slice of paradise.
Holly, sounds like your crew has made short work of the turkey leftovers. That is always a welcome relief to move on from turkey, isn't it? Your leftover reheats sound pretty yummy. You are very innovative in your casserole making ability. I am with you in hoping Jan has made it through half of her big sale! I bet she scores big with all her handiwork. So, Holly, do you consider your brother to be a confirmed bachelor? My sister has never married. I think she has never quite mastered the idea of compromise...
We got our tree into the house, in the tree stand and placed in front of a window. So, nowhere near finished. Maybe I will make a lot of headway on it tomorrow. I am almost finished with two Christmas dish towels for dd. I have boughs of evergreen wrapped in a sheet on the kitchen table. I will make up some sprays for here and there outdoors. They work up quickly and they really add a lot of impact for no $$.
I need to make more laundry detergent. Boy does that save money. All those years of literally pouring money down the drain...

hey chickie Poos!!!!! Just stopping by to let you know that i am still alive. I will be going to Mayo Clinic again on Dec. 5th and Jan. 14th. boy am I getting tired of all this traveling. It has been many days and many trips.. It is to early to tell if meds are working, but am hanging in there. I dodged a bullet last week. I was told I would have to have my colon removed, instead i will be on a strong medication for a year and then more major testing. This next round of tests is for my dizzy spells. I'll keep you posted.
My mother-in-law passed away last week. We spent several days in the nursing home and then arrangements whic had to be put on hold because of Thanksgiving. Anyway funeral was yesterday and the "family reunion" has come to an end.
today we are tired out and haven't gotten much done. |
