“Being a physical education specialist by profession I know exactly how to firm up but have not put it first since I have had my son. I lost 30 lbs by increased activity and diet and kept it off for a year and a bit, but gained again since moving into a smaller home and not making it a priority. This past summer I gained about 20 lbs back and have lost 10 since. I am going mainly by the feel of my clothes.
I am now aiming to tighten up and gain more fitness. I will be reffing basketball from now until March, and that will give me enough extra running time until we move into our bigger home so I can set up my treadmill again and focus on cardio again. Horseback riding has helped toning but I need more on my stomach.
Month 1
Goal: to firm up. Frequency – 2x per week minimum
Exercises performed
2 sets - 12 lunges 2 sets - 12squats
40 reverse curls 20 oblique crunches both sides 40 crunches
2 sets of 20 - bicep curls
2 sets of 20 triceps extensions
30 fire hydrants( hip lateral lifts often called a fire hydrant )
20 flys.”

“I have been collecting buttons for a while now, I've even been able to incorporate buttons from my mom and grandmother. I keep them separated by color and then style using tackle boxes. That way I can tell if I have enough to do the project I have in mind! I keep fanciful or unique buttons in a box separately, that is the white box in the photo. I have several more boxes of buttons, just couldn't fit everything into the photograph!
It was good to get everything organized and in one place! I even discovered a button from a Disneyland uniform that was in a bag of miscellaneous stuff someone gave me.”

“I wanted to use some pretty vintage inspired buttons combined with actual vintage buttons for a bracelet I'd wear this spring. There are 6 pink/turquoise buttons with various themes (i.e New York city, Florida) that I combined with turquoise glass, pink plastic and lots of pearly glass and plastic with rhinestones! Originally I put everything onto a single bracelet. When I had trouble fastening it on myself I decided to try the three-strand bracelet and liked it MUCH better! It also gave me the opportunity to use more buttons.
I LOVE it! I'm going to 'need' to make a very fun dress to wear it with once the weather is warmer. Right now I wear it with turquoise sweaters and fondly look forward to it getting warmer here.”

“I have learned how to make the five required knots. After having earned all three levels of the knitting badge, these knots were easy! Four of the five you-tube videos that I watched were made by fishermen. The fifth video, for the barrel knot, was made by a woman making jewelry. It occurred to me that jewelry-making might be a good idea for a new badge!
I will definitely be able to tie a proper knot to keep my fish hook on the line when I go fishing in April. As an added bonus, I'm pretty sure I'll impress my father and brother!”

“I have checked out the Dept. of Fish and Game website and the fishing regulations in my area (and how to obtain my fishing license). My dad discussed with me today the place where he goes fishing, the type of fish he catches there, and how. I researched on-line today the type of bait used for when he and I go fishing in April.
I know where to purchase my fishing license, when fishing season starts, and what I will need to go fishing. I was surprised to learn that trout (which is the type of fish I'll be trying to catch) likes cheese, marshmallows and corn, in addition to earthworms. Although I'm not opposed to hooking a worm, I'm intrigued by the grocery-store bait and plan to give it a try!”

“I have chosen the Polish culture and language to research.
I learned how to count to ten in Polish in the second grade, fifty years ago, when I attended a Polish parochial school. Not wanting to rest on my laurels for this badge, I learned how to spell the numbers which is way more difficult than it may sound! I also learned how to say "allow me to introduce myself" in Polish. (Again, way more difficult that it would appear!) I have written the numbers (correctly) several times during the day today, and I said the greeting to two people I work with (one of whom speaks Polish and understood what I said [I nailed it!]). I will say the phrase to my parents when I visit them tonight - my Dad will probably understand me; my mom won't - but they'll both be proud of me (for saying the phrase in Polish, and for getting a badge for learning about Poland).
I have begun reading the book "A History of Poland" which I will read during the three levels for this badge, and finish reading before I submit my application for the expert level.
I'm happy with what I've learned so far and I'm very excited about learning lots more - my Dad is Polish and my Mom is Lithuanian (neighboring country with similar background) so I'm finding out about my ancestry. My Polish lessons in parochial school pretty much began and ended with counting to 10, so learning the language as an adult will mean a lot to me!”

“I am a power walker and that is my #1 strategy for coping with stress, anxiety, aches and pains, malaise or other maladies. It is also my #1 activity to enjoy for my own pleasure to be outside and enjoy fresh air, sunshine and the countryside.
I am also a musician so playing the piano, singing or listening to favorite music are also ways I relax and de-stress.
Journaling is another way I take time to de-stress, relax and "ventilate", getting my thoughts, feelings, etc. on papers.
These strategies are some that I regularly and consistently practice on a daily basis, ALWAYS! Part of my life for decades and I believe are why I enjoy good overall, whole-body health and wellness!
Totally committed to my strategies because they are time proven and work!”

“I continue to engage in my music, learning new styles, new techniques and listening to new genres to see what's new. Many years ago my husband and I took dance classes which was one of the most enjoyable and fun things I've ever done. We do a lot of informal dancing around our house. I dance with our son around the house almost every time he visits (weekly). He is one of the best most natural dancers ever! I also bought a DVD teaching some of the different ballroom dances and am learning some of those here at home.
As stated previously, my relaxation/exercise/de-stressing strategies are ingrained in me and have been in practice for decades. I have also logged all of these activities in my journal/planner and in my "Tracker" on the Presidents Challenge website. Just in the past month I earned my Platinum Award from Presidents Challenge, which is ONE MILLION points! Got a free t-shirt too!
Practicing, logging and tracking are commitments, and I will continue to fulfill.”

“We actually started "glamping" before it was called that, with canopy and tent setups in our yard and in the forest.
But, my daughter and I probably started "officially" glamping when we set out on our Farmgirls on the Loose/Women of the Wild West Road trip the summer of 2011.
We started gathering our glamping gear then and have collected suitcases full of all kinds of curtains, pretty sheets, tablecloths, doilies, hankies... a lot of things that we use to glamp our site. Bedding, baskets, dishes, china, pots and pans, decorations, and the list goes on and on.
Much of our gear came from our homes, but we have also become masters at thrifting and have found bargains, and have made other particular items to take along.
We were seasoned campers long before, so we were able to know what to take for wind and weather. We've upgraded our tent and purchased newer, sturdier tarps for protection. We are "tent glampers" so we won't be able to take shelter in a glamper trailer.
We have shared pictures of our different glamping adventures in the Farmgirl Connection OUTPOST section, there are three different "photo journals". The photo is of one of our "boudoir" tables in our glamp-site canopy.”

“I have purchased and read, many times, "Glamping with Mary Jane", and have given it as a gift to two different farmgirls. Many of the ideas in the book we had already been implementing, but are going to be adding a "loo" to our setup, looking into the equipment and "skirt" ideas as in the book as well as a few other decorating ideas.
We've already hosted more then one glamping adventure with other gals participating. Backyard party with snacks and S'mores, sharing a recipe for Homemade Marshmallows.
We actually invited two MEN who were camping separately and alone but were neighboring campers to our canopy for Irish Coffee and cookies.
We've also invited other ladies in the campsites over for tea and cookies, sharing recipes for shortbread and how-to directions for making the glamping mini-light strand shades.
One of the most enjoyable things about glamping out and about is meeting all the wonderful people we have met. They are intrigued by our setup and many stop by to look it all over, check out all our fun things, ask about who we are, what we're up to and, if they're interested in more, how to go about it.
We have met and visited with people from all over the United States, England, Canada, Australia and China. A good percentage of our highest compliments have come from men!
More glamping adventures are planned!”

“Using herbs in our food preparation is nothing new. My husband and I have both used all kinds of herbs in our cooking for years.
The most commonly used and popular herbs in our house are probably:
-OREGANO which we use in all kinds of pasta sauces, pizza, burgers, other beef dishes and even sprinkled in green salad.
-CUMIN is a favorite for our Mexican food dishes of which there is a huge variety, sauces and eggs
-ROSEMARY also for pasta dishes, but also for chicken, pork and turkey and in breads
-SAGE is a favorite for chicken, turkey and beef dishes of every description
-BASIL is also a favorite for pasta dishes, sauces, beef dishes and eggs
These are just a few basics that we've used for much of our married life.
This certainly doesn't describe our complete "Herb Library". This is just the way we cook, always!”

“I actually have two herb gardens. The first one was planted after we built our log house on the property my dad deeded to us from the farm.In that garden I have oregano, savory, chives and mint.
We harvest these herbs all through the season and use them fresh in our meal preparation. I also dry them and store away for winter use. They are relatively easy to grow and use and add such fragrance and flavor to meals. The mint makes great iced tea!”

“I used a long plastic tote that I had on hand and organized my threads in a zip lock bag. I also stored embroider thread in a zip lock bag. I included all of my sewing scissors, tape measure, straight pins, I also have a few buttons for emergencies and some safety pins. I used a small mason jar and crafted a little pin cushion in the lid for straight pins and needles. I stored my safety pins in the jar so that they are handy when needed!
It turned out good and all fit nicely in the plastic tote. Now when I have a sewing project I can grab that tote and have all of my supplies right with me at my sewing machine!”

“The requirement for the intermediate level of this badge was to recycle for a week, but my family and I have been recycling our cardboard, aluminum cans and plastic bottles for several years now. The last 3 years or so we have bagged all the aluminum cans up and taken them every few months to the recycling center. The money received goes directly into my child's college savings fund!
It is amazing to see how much we actually use that can be recycled. Also it has been a wonderful learning experience for my daughter and has taught her responsibility.”

“I regularly shop at Aldi, which makes using reusable shopping bags easy because without them, you have to purchase bags for your groceries. I found a set of four bags at EarthFare which zip together in a small bundle when not in use, but which are good sized labeled bags when in use. They have printed on the outside what you should put on the inside; making sorting easy even for my children to help with at the store. Using these, plus two additional bags, I am better organized and far more environmentally friendly than before. Plus, there are fewer trips from the car to the house when I get home!
I really like having my reusable bags! I remember when we used regular plastic bags from the store and you end up with a pile of them under your sink and eventually tossing out or recycling loads of them because it takes so many for a typical shopping trip.”
