I feel so blessed with all the wonderful things my little farm provides for me. Right now I'm busy making butter since the cool weather allows the cream to collect on the top of the milk in the bulk tank before it warms up enough to be chilled again. (In the summer the milk is stirring and chilling too frequently to get cream from the top.) Yesterday we tapped the maples since it's getting above freezing this week. And this weekend I'll try starting seeds again. Last year it didn't work out so well.

I love this, Heather!! :). It’s amazing what we can do in our gardens even before we can plant out in the sunshine!

Enjoy the goodness that your farm gives you. Good luck with the sap collecting. A big job, but well worth the effort. We will be waiting a bit yet before tapping. I started pepper seeds last Sunday, but they take 10-21 days to germinate. Fingers crossed that you and I have better luck this year with seed starting.

Heather, that all sounds amazing! Enjoy your wonderful cream and good luck with your taps and seeds! I need to start thinking about my seeds too.

Heather, you Farm is your "Heaven on Earth"! Excited for your butter and tapping the trees. Lily June opened your cards last night, she told her mom, you have a ton of stickers too! Lol! Connie Sue |

The sap is flowing today!! More like a slow drip, but I'm happy just the same :)

That's great news Heather! How much syrup do you think you will get this year?

I honestly have no idea. It depends on the weather and we all know how crazy the weather has been! It looks like this week will be a good week for the sap to flow - above freezing during the day, below freezing at night. I did get 16oz of syrup from about 8 gallons of sap a couple days ago for the first boil :)

Heather how was your sap season? We have cooked three times now. Got about 11 gallons of syrup. Our weather has been up and down with temps, rain and snow. We will cook once more for sure, and then we might be pulling taps.

It was fast and furious! We didn't have the usual freeze for a few days and slow things down. A couple days I would empty the buckets right before we came in for the night and they'd be overflowing in the morning! We also lost about 15 gallons of sap because it was too warm and got all cloudy. Research suggested it wasn't worth boiling as the bacterial clouds were eating all the sugar so the taste and yield would not be good. 11 gallons of syrup sounds great! I don't have nearly that much, but with just 4 trees and 8 taps I'm happy with our yield this year. How does your 11 gallons (so far) compare to your past yields?

Oh Heather, I feel ya! I can totally relate but not as in much depth because we have no cows or farmland to farm but our little 60 acre homestead keeps us so busy AND entertained! Sometimes I sit after working hard all day outside in the garden, greenhouse, yards and watch our wildlife critters and listen to the geese at the pond and feel enormous blessings also! Thankful to God for sure! I never thought I'd end up in such a perfect spot. Yes, there are issues surrounding us but this little spot is heaven on earth for now! So im thankful right there with you!
