This was a hot topic a couple years ago and like most who did strip their laundry, I was shocked and told myself "never again will I let me laundry get this bad again". And then, I did. I "forgot" about laundry stripping and today I decided I was going to do a couple loads and see how bad my towels and bedding have gotten. I'm embarrassed to say, it was bad.
So let's revisit this again and get the dirt, chemicals, and yuck out of our laundry again.
This is the recipe I used: Use as hot as water as you can in either your bathtub or washer. 1/2 cup of powdered laundry soap, 1/4 borax, and 1/4 cup washing soda. Soak until the water cools, 4-6 hours or overnight. I've heard that some newer washers won't let you soak loads because they drain automatically. My new Speed Queen didn't automatically drain. YAY! So there are newer washers that let you strip in them and skip trying to transfer a heavy wet load into them.

Never done this myself. I wonder what my towels would look like? I use homemade laundry soap, vinegar, line dry. We use homemade soap and I use homemade shampoo. Speed Queen will be my next washer. I have a speed queen dryer, since we got married, 40 years now, lol. Works great but don't use it much.

I use a version of this homemade soap everytime I do laundry. Would I still need to strip it?
