My oldest will be going in tomorrow morning to get a pallet expander placed and braces put on. Last week he also had 2 baby teeth pulled. We were told at his last appointment that he really needed to see an orthodontist because of how his teeth were coming in. The poor kid has an underbite and his pallet is so small that it's causing his new teeth to come in on the roof of his mouth. If we didn't get this taken care of soon it would cause big problems with his jaw. The orthodontist also suggested we get him in to get his tonsils out. It's been a lot of information overload!

Anyone have a pallet expander or a child who had one? How was your experience?

Krista,

I’m so sorry he has to go through this. Best to just get it done. My hubby had a pallet expander as a child. If you specific questions, just let me know and I will ask him. I do know though the key that his mom would use to make the quarter turn everyday was one a long string in case she dropped it! :) lol

Karen :)

To quote one of my past preschoolers “Not one of those Karens, but a good Karen”! Haha

Karen, we have been telling him that same thing. They said if he waits until he is older it will be pretty painful. Surprisingly we don't have a key to turn it. I thought we would too, but my hubby said we don't turn it, it's spring tension. At the current moment we don't have a specific question. He is just struggling with talking and with having excessive saliva. It makes it difficult to understand him. He does have some pain but the Motrin is helping with that.

Krista, I knew a friend of my youngest who had the same thing done. After a couple of weeks, things got much easier and better. As for the tonsils, a trip to an ENT might be a good idea because that MD will know more about the tonsil situation that could be an important unrelated issue for your son. Chronic infected tonsils are more of a problem in the long run than a T&A surgery when child is young. They bounce back so quickly and their overall health improves for the better.

Winnie, I agree! About 4 years ago I asked on here for some advice on how awful Everleigh was sleeping. She would wake in the night every night and just cry. After a very long time we finally found out her tonsils were so large they were causing her to have sleep apnea. She would stop breathing in her sleep and it would cause her to wake up crying. Once they were removed her sleeping completely changed for the better. I am all for getting them out at a young age. I had mine taken out at the age of 22 and it was horrible. I had a hard time bouncing back. As of today his saliva is less and his talking is starting to improve. He does still have a little bit of a slur, but we can understand him more.
