My apples are getting close to ripe. I have cortland and honey crisp apples. The other trees took the year off. I checked them yesterday and both are just a touch under ripe. The woodpeckers are getting into them like crazy. The pileated woodpeckers really enjoy the apples and even the flowering crab apples. Add in the deer cleaning up the windfalls. We do have two small trees, Zestars, that we left a few apples on to taste them. They were ripe the first of August. I picked apples for my ma in her orchard a few weeks ago. The Duchess apples are her favorite. It is a very old tree, that thankfully keeps going. Enjoy the season.

Michelle. so enjoyed hearing you talk about your and your mother's apple orchards. Hope the woodpeckers don't do too much damage.

Enjoy your apple crop Michele. Is the old apple tree at your mom's house one our great-grandparents had planted? Have fun canning your apple pie filling to enjoy all winter long.

Hopefully the woodpeckers will leave you some apples. They all sound delicious. I can't wait until my apple tree has apples. Enjoy all those yummy apples!

Yes Dawn the tree was planted by our great grandparents. Being over a hundred years old, I am amazed it keeps going. the land has been in our family for 123 years now.

Michele, enjoy those fresh apples from your farm this year. Maybe you can make something with them for our Annual Apple Pie Sunday, on September 29, to finalize our celebration here at MJF!

Michele I'm so glad the tree is still producing. Our great-grandparents would have been thrilled that you are still farming at the homestead. Enjoy your apples!

What a blessing Michelle to be able to carry on the farming traditions on your great-grandparents land.

Sylvia -- if you do an online search for "apple fritters" you will find a lot of good recipes.

I finished up with apples yesterday. Canned 6 quarts of juice. I picked most of the apples off the tree then, for a friend. The woodpeckers really did alot of damage to alot of apples. The cows get the bruised apples that had fallen, and boy do they love them.
From Americas Test Kitchen= apple fritters= put your apple pieces in your dry ingredients before adding the wet. Also they use apple juice or cider for the liquid for more flavor. They are good!
