So, while walking the dog, I was peeking at some sites on my cell phone. And spotted this one, how cute a little tote bag made using simple 5 inch squares. They are probably actually 5 1/2 inch squares. But based on the simple nine patch method, and only using six for the insides. What a great way to either use up leftover squares or fabric or…

I think that this would be an easy project for a beginner, and of course it goes without saying an even easier project for an intermediate or advanced quilter. Simple nine patch some fabric for the inside lining and the handles. And using fusible webbing/interfacing to give it a bit of body. I may just have to try this. After I attempt all my other UFOs – PhD projects. Ha ha ha.

Grace, I love this bag! Oh how I wish I could sew! I would probably make a bigger one though and use it as my current crochet project bag.

Hey Krista, actually, this probably would be a fun project to work on for simple beginning skills with quilting. Even if you just want to test the waters cut out nine squares that are 5 1/2 inches each side. Then lay out the squares in rows three top three middle three bottom. You can move the little fabric squares around till you get the right color mix that you like. Then, so the top row left to right lay it down, so the middle row left to right, lay it down, so the bottom row left to right lay it down, and then so the top row to the middle row and the middle row to the bottom row. it’s best to iron in between, but you can also just fingerpress the seams flat..
This will give you an idea how to sew the squares together, and feel confident in your sewing skills.
Worst case they don’t lineup perfect ,, I’m of the philosophy of hiding mistakes by sewing on a… Yo-yo…

Grace -

The 5" squares called for in the pattern ARE only 5" square. You can pack a set of 42 squares and they are called Charm Packs.

10" squares in a pack are called Layer Cakes, 2-1/2" squares in a pack are Mini Charms, and 2-1/2" strip sets are called Jelly Rolls. LOL! Most center around eating.

What a fun and pretty tote idea! It is so unique and a very flexible idea for colors and pattern combinations.
