OK, is it just me? I was at the market today and bought a salt grinder of Himalayan salt. I happen to notice on the side of the bottle, there’s an expiration date…. 09/14/2026 Is it just me or does anybody find the irony in this.?. Since most salts are hundreds of years old but if you buy it in a store in a jar it has an expiration date. Ha ha ha.!

Amusing to be sure. I've seen exdates on water too.

The container they are in would break down from the salt if left hundreds of years.
Judith, if the water is in a plastic jug it will eventually leak.

In both cases it is the container that is at fault. Usually plastic. Plastic is one of my major concerns about our world. It's everywhere, littering the highways, large floating islands of it in the oceans, even in our blood. We don't seem to be able to get rid of it yet it seems to be impossible to avoid. I remember when I was growing up plastic wasn't a part of our life. I'm trying to do without it but it seems hopeless.
Wow. Sorry about changing the subject.....

I totally agree with you Judith. Way to much plastic. And yes growing up there wasn't any plastic. Why can't we go back to glass containers?

Glass, cans, waxed cardboard, wax paper. No more single-use plastic. Most tap water is perfectly fine to drink; if not then get a filter. Take your own bag to the store. It's not much but even a little will help.

I've gotten rid of all my cheap plastic containers. I still have Tupperware that I use, but leftovers go into glass containers.

Judith, that is good to know. Thanks for bringing up the issue of plastics too because I totally agree that there is way too much of it these days.

Personally, I luv using my tote bags.. I am tired of clerks putting 10 heavy items in one plastic bag so it can rip out as I am trying to put the bags in my car... I liked the old school paper bags.. with out glued on handles... easier to position in the car unlike plastic bags that fall over.. My fabric tote bags are all well constructed and I have several of the insulated ones for cold storage. It's no hassle to grab and go with my own bags.. Growing up in Germany,, we always brought totable sacks... fruit was wrapped in paper cone shaped sacks.. They were so ahead of us with recycling. Both wine and beer bottles were returned.. unlike here, use one time and toss out the window... uugh!

I have always had issues with plastic containers, way before I even understood anything about them. They always make my food taste weird. So for as long as I can remember I have used glass.
Grace, it sounds like the US can take some lessons from Germany. Actually, it could take many lessons from other places lol!

I have changed out my plastic to glass except for things I don't heat up like Tupperware. I also use parchment and silicone reusable bags to freeze in. I don't understand how some places are getting rid of plastic bags, which is great I use paper or canvas totes, but they can sell us bread in plastic and other things all packaged in plastic. There is so much that is plastic anymore.

I think the next time I am at Home Goods,, I will buy a nice set of glass salt & pepper grinders. Then I can buy my sea salt & peppercorns fresh and put into the glass containers..
I luv a good excuse to go into town and go shopping! heeheehee!

I too am getting to the point where I hate plastic everywhere. Over the last two years Nora and I have been systematically getting rid of plastic storage- including our shampoo! We use solid shampoo and conditioner on our hair and it’s never been healthier! I’m going to order in the resins and start making beeswax wrap clothes to sell in my Etsy store along with my beeswax candles! You can use those to store sandwiches or cover dishes instead of plastic film wraps

We use a pepper grinder. Never thought about salt. I use RealSalt so have never had to grind it. If I change to Celtic salt I may get a grinder. We like using the whole peppercorns.

Denise- we buy it from our local health food store sometimes but we actually have a subscription setup with Kitsch. We really like their rice water shampoo and conditioner. Nora and I both have hair down past our waists (Nora’s is a bit longer than mine) so we need to have good hair care so there is less breakage. I couldn’t keep paying for the salon hair care and we decided to go plastic free after giving the solid shampoo a try!
