Ok, I sort of channeled my inner German Betty Crocker! Lol!
I bought 2 boxes of pretzel mix via a company in Germany..
The first one was so-so,,, but 2nd one turned out yummy!
The first batch, I used the food grade lye that was included…
The 2nd batch I did not use the lye and instead, I used baking soda
in slightly boiling water and put the dough/rolls in for 30 seconds then I baked the rolls.
Oh my stars they turned out yummy!

A friend of mine in Germany sent me her ‘from scratch’ recipe,, so now I
Need to brave-up and make pretzels from scratch!

Grace, they look great! Do they come out like the ones the Amish make. They put them in a water mixture before baking too. Though I'm not sure if it is the lye or baking soda.

Ohhhh, Grace! Be still my heart! Those look so yummy! Can you please send me the site you bought them from? You brought back so many fun good memories! We'd go volksmarching and end with a pretzel samich or caffe& kuchen! When we settled here near Ft Rucker there was an authentic German bakery we would buy our brother and pretzel rolls from. Exactly like the ones from the bakerie! Do you remember dampfknudels?? My favorite skiing treat!!!

Dianna,,, 'Germanshop24' is the company.. They have been out of the box mix for the past 2 months, probably because the October fest..,, I have learned one thing with them, order early! lol!

I have 2 friends in Germany, one in Berlin and one in Bavaria who have sent me their recipes for homemade German style pretzels...
I plan to try both recipes when I get back from California (delayed family trip)...
I very much like the baking soda hot water hath to get the rolls brown and that unique taste.. it is 1800mlof water and 100gr of baking soda.

Heather ,,, hurry, run, we'll make a big batch of them!
