I have 2 nieces that are 5 and 2 nephews that are not quite 3. I'm looking for some ideas to make them for Christmas. Sewing, crochet, or easy knit projects are what I usually do. I'm planning on pillow cases and that's as far as I've gotten LOL! Is there anything you've made that was a hit for your family/friends?

Here are just a few thoughts for you…
you live in Ohio, where it is colder in the winter. What about a simple Cowl/poncho for the girls, and stocking caps for the boys. I have been knitting and crocheting cowls using large knitting and crochet needles and #6 weight yarn. They go very quickly, and there are quite a few patterns on Pinterest for children. Also lots of easy stocking caps.
Another idea would be to make fleece mittens for all of them.

Heather I have made fleece blankets, pillow cases, flannel pants to name a few things. I also always make and give the kids an ornament. Then when they grow up and are out on their own, they have Christmas ornaments to hang. One year I purchased silly fun slippers, with bunnies, dinosaurs and what ever on them. The kids had fun with that. this year I need to come up with ideas for the boys. The older boys might get wooden brain teaser puzzles that we can make. I do make a file on pinterest that I put ideas in throughout the year. Good luck

Linda - they all live in Michigan so those are great ideas. I made them all hats last year, but I bet the girls would love a poncho or a shawl. I bet I could find a fun scarf pattern - maybe one with pockets. Thanks!
Michele - I was thinking about an ornament, just haven't figured out what yet. I like the flannel pants idea. They love visiting the cows when they come down. I bet some cow pajama pants would be a hit!!!!

Heather, so I think of Everleigh when you ask because she is 5 too. How about crocheting or sewing a scrunchie? Everleigh loves scrunchies right now! Or even a hair bow or headband! How about slippers for the boys? Or super hero capes?

Heather -
Cowls and ponchos (really just longer cowls LOL!) are really popular right now, and it is something they could wear to school in the winter instead of a sweatr.
Another thing for the girls might be a denim apron using the tops of a pair of jeans they have outgrown. Or a purse made from an old pair of theirs (or pair from thrift shop); maybe they have a pair of jeans with decorations on the pockets that they liked but cannot wear any longer. That way they can extend its use a bit.
And for the boys, a denim cobbler apron with their name on it, made from the legs of jeans. You could embroider or fabric applique their names. An adult apron takes just 2 legs from a mans pants, so I'm sure a kids could be made from their outgrown jeans or the bottom of the girls if you make aprons. LOL!

I used to make a lot of pajama bottoms for the grand boys, flannel and regular cotton. They are fairly quick and easy.

I also crocheted them a lot of hats. I found great patterns on Ravelry. I remember doing a spiederman hat that turned out really fun! He’s 12 and still has it, even though it’s too small now :)

Krista - I bet both scrunchies and capes would be a hit! I'm not very good at crocheting to size. Without any little ones close by to try on the slippers they'd end up way too big (happens with everything I make!) I am planning to make some santa slippers for my sister in law and my other niece. She's 14 but wears bigger shoes than I do :)
Linda - aprons and purses are great ideas! I think both sets of them have a play kitchen.
Debbie - isn't it wonderful when they hold onto a gift that you made. When my oldest nephew was little he was here on the farm all the time. I made him a little scrapbook when he still young - less than 10. He's 22 now and still has it!
Thank you all for your help! I knew you'd help me out :)

Heather, I am actually thinking of making Everleigh some scrunchies for Christmas. If I find a good pattern I will send it to you.
