Here are some photos of our performance on Mother's Day. We did two, actually, and they were nicely attended. Such a beautiful day to be with loved ones! My friend took photos, though they didn't get some of the ones I would have liked, this will give you an idea, anyhoo.
This is the set before we begin:
Momma and her ducklings
When Ugly Duckling is out of his egg
The Old Woman, Chickabiddy Shortshanks and her cat
The Swans in the final scene
The Cast
My former ballet student, who is autistic, Alex. She's grown so pretty!
I'm associated with an art studio here in Kentucky called Rising Star Studios, for children with autism. We are putting on a production of The Ugly Duckling and we had rehearsal last night and it's really coming together! The lady responsible for all of it is my friend, Mary, and she's beyond talented....she's made these lifesize swans, chicks, baby swan, ducklings, ducks, chicken etc...out of felted and hand dyed wool. They're like marionettes, I guess you could say--suspended on strings from a handle(?)...anyway, they're just amazing--they feel like real animals to me, with the weight, and size, and the colors! Oh the colors! So, we perform The Ugly Duckling. There's some singing (which I don't do ) and some of the students work the animals, and the others help with sound effects, and some are in the "chorus" and it's just wonderful...The stage is set with all different hand dyed silks imaging water, or purples for rain, and a rainbow colored one for the end of play when the ugly duckling realizes he's a swan, and wisteria and wildflowers hang from the top of the "stage"...Our performance is on Mother's Day (2 afternoon shows) and all proceeds benefit the studio.

Oh Jonni, that sounds wonderful.....will you be taping it and selling the tapes? I am sure others out there would buy....especially if they are not close enough to attend the show. MJ

Oh, I'm sure someone will tape it, but probably not for sale. It's just something Mary wanted to do....she lost her daughter to MD 4 years ago, and this is something she wanted to dedicate to her, and also help the studio. It's quite a professional production, though. If I can get photos of her animals, and anyone is interested, I'd be glad to share them. They really make me want to hug them...they're just perfect.
Like I said, I was just really excited about what a great experience it was after this week, and thought it might be nice to share it with you gals...Thanks, Emmjay, for your interest.

Jonni-
It sounds like it will be a beautiful production. Your friend must be very talented! Can you post some pictures of the puppets?

I would love to see all the pictures. I am so glad there are programs out there for autistic children. We are signing my daughter up for a special needs baseball team this summer. She has been practicing on her little t ball.

Thank you for the heart-touching descriptions. I would so love to be there. Please do post pictures, or let us know if we can pass around a video or something. Maybe we could send a donation in return for being on the "video mailing list"? A way to reach a bigger audience? It just sounds so lovely. What a positive. Your friend Mary sounds incredible.
We make a difference. |

Wow, Jonni! Your friends work is amazing. Her color tones are absolutely jewel-like. And at first, I wasn't sure that those swans WEREN'T real!
