Our church's ladies missionary group met this past Wednesday and our program was on making prayer shawls (we voted last month to do this); 2 ladies from other towns came to tell us how they became involved and what their churches do. They gave us the "directions" (there are many variations, of course, but they gave us the basic pattern to get us started) and we broke into 3 groups -- those who knew what they were doing and got started, those who wanted to learn to knit, and those who wanted to learn to crochet.

I learned how to knit when I was 11 or so, but haven't knitted since I was a teen, and even then I only knitted scarves. I've always wanted to learn to crochet, so I joined the group of crochet wanna-bes, of which there were 2. The very sweet lady really worked with me, but I just could NOT grasp how to do it!! The yarn never felt comfortable wrapped around my pinky or any other way she showed me, and I couldn't figure out where to stick the hook, and all sorts of things. I finally dropped out of that group and knitted for what time was left.

I went to the library yesterday and got a children's book on learning to crochet. There are nice-sized, clear pictures for each step of the stitch, and I think I can teach myself how to do this if I sit down alone tonight and concentrate.

Anyone else here taught themselves to crochet? Want to share your experience?

My grandmother taught me to crochet a chain, when I was 6. That is all that I ever did for the next 37 years. I then taught myself by trial and error and reading patterns. There is a great site online that has videos of how to do certain stitches. You can watch the stitch over and over until you get it.

Have fun!
