My friend's birthday is coming up and she loves sunflowers. I have some 10 inch fabric squares of sunflowers. Each square is different. I thought of making her a table runner or just a square topper of some sort, but I can't picture a good way to put it together. I don't have a lot of quilting experience - is there a pattern that looks good using different fabrics that works well with 10 inch or smaller squares?

Don't knnw how many squares you have, but maybe enough to make a small bag,
then put some sunflower seed packets in it.

Great minds think alike Nancy - I already have a canvas type fabric that I'm making a bag out of. It's big enough that it's going to hold her gifts :) And I have some sunflower seeds. I'm also going to use yellow peeps to make her a sunflower cake. Did I mention she likes sunflowers LOL! Last year I made her a sunflower apron.

Heather, a sunflower cake! Cute idea.
I think a table runner would be awesome. You could use smaller squares of sunflower fabric with white squares and that would make a very pretty runner. At least it does in my head. Or even placemats using the pattern or technique you used to make my feedsack potholders!

what if you do a table topper quilt,, or even a small hanging wall quilt approximately a 36" x 36", and use yellow
strips in-between each of the 10" squares both vertical and horizontal..

I was thinking about a bag made out of the sunflower fabrics or use them to embellish the canvas fabric you were going to use and put some little sunflower surprises inside? She could use the bag all summer and into fall. What a thoughtful friend you are!!!

That's a neat bag Marie! The canvas fabric I have for the bag is already embroidered with a basket of sunflowers. I just have to stitch it together. I'm not sure how much yellow fabric I have, but I'll have to lay them all out and see if I have a coordinating fabric. I was sent a pattern for a simple table runner that uses fat quarters. I might try my hand at some home made bias tape with the coordinating fabric and use that pattern. I'll post some pictures of my creation when I'm finished :) Thanks so much for brainstorming with me everyone!

Heather, I can’t remember, do you crochet? I made a large sunflower coaster sort of thing a couple years back for a friend. I can see if I still have the pattern. It would be pretty on the center of your table runner with a vase full of sunflowers!

Yup, I do crochet and I'd love the pattern if it's not too much trouble.

I'm working on finishing some of the embroidery for the tote bag. Then I'll work on the crochet pattern. I'll be sure to take pictures and show you. I love seeing everyone's creations and sometimes they spark ideas for me so maybe my creations will do the same for someone else :)
