Hello farm girls, I’ve never been part of a forum before but you all seem so friendly, creative, and helpful. I’ve been craving the company and common sense of other country women these days and I think you may be just what the doctor ordered.

Although I still feel like such a novice, I grew up on a ranch and come from a ranching family. I live on 100 acres in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. My grandparents moved here in the 1950’s and raised broadbreasted bronze turkeys by the thousands. They passed this ranch to my father and my aunt, and they left it to me. We stopped raising turkeys in the 70’s, but the ranch is still home to organic gardens, horses, cats, dogs, and 30+ hereford/limousin beef cattle.

I recently turned 32 and it’s been two years now that I’ve been the one in charge here. With everyone else gone, I feel like so much knowledge and experience have been lost in time. I think I’m the luckiest girl in the world to have been born in this little slice of heaven and to be trusted with the responsibility of caring for it, but I must say it can be challenging and a little overwhelming at times. No matter what though, I could never imagine living anywhere else. My heart is in these oak trees, the tall grass, the granite rocks and every cow pie, broken board, and unidentifiable half buried rusty tractor implement you might step in or trip over by accident!

I’d really like to have contact with other women who have some of the same responsibilities I do, women who are independent and brave enough to make neighbors of rattlesnakes, coyotes, and mountain lions. Women who use chainsaws, raise gardens, raise cattle, and raise hell. Does this describe any of you? I know it must. Now I love the friends I have, don’t get me wrong. But they don’t know the difference between a shoot and chute and they don’t understand why I can’t just run off for a good time whenever I feel like it.

I learned about Mary Jane in a New Yorker article a few years ago and then I picked up one of her magazines at a book store. How inspiring and comforting to know there are so many other creative, socially conscious and fun country loving women everywhere. I really look forward to seeing you around.

Thanks, Clare I just submitted my registration for MJ's Outpost. If you didn't mention it, I wouldn't have known it was there.

And thanks to everyone else who has been so warm and welcoming. It's just amazing to be greeted from places I've only visited in my imagination...

Welcome Sarah! We have a lot in common. My parents live on my grandparents old quarter horse ranch on 165 acres in Texas. That is really home to me, although right now I am living in Wisconsin with my husband and three kiddos. We are going back there for two months in May and June and I can not wait for my boys to get to ride horses again, play with the farm dogs, chase the barn cats, fish for crawdads in the creek and build fence with my Dad (their Grandad).

Welcome to MJF!

Oooh, I love all your animals, Beverly. We hope to have chickens soon, and I'm pretty sure goats will come eventually. For now, we have plenty of other horse and cattle related projects to absorb our time and energy. Between our "real" jobs and other "matters of consequence" that is...
