Okay, Rob and I try to stick with our take on the traditional gifts for anniversary.

Earth Day is our 2nd anniversary and cotton is the traditional gift. Last year, paper, I wrote him a huge letter as that was the original basis of our friendship when we were kids, This year I am really stuck, truly. I have been thinking about it for about 3 months now and I am at a loss....

Any ideas?

Could you maybe create a collage type image..that goes on the concept of "I love you to the moon and back" a funny little kid's book saying..but I can imagine a nice collaged image with an earth type design and the moon and some celestial type designs in it.
Anyhow..kind of an artsy idea..but you could use some "cotton" elements in it. fabrics, threads, etc.

which verse sounds better?

"I do love nothing in the world so well as you." -Shakespeare

or

"Not one day has passed that I hae not loved you." -Napoleon Bonaparte

I got sort of an idea, but I am having a hard time deciding

This is probably going to be really "hippy" but you're handy with a sewing machine, so what about making him a beautiful cotton tunic type shirt? Something that really is more like a pullover, unstructured, in a nice cotton fabric that he could wear all year round?

I always think of how romantic the line is in Scarborough Fair..."tell her to make me a cambric shirt" ...I always thought that would be such a wonderful gift for the right kind of guy. My dh isn't that guy :)

Tough (on the verses...) I like them both, but after reading a biography of Bonaparte, I'd go with Will...

yay!!! I love that song, too, and it's just always transported me--that line. If you do it, you have to share a photo of your creation. I know you can come up with something!!! I just think it would sooo neat to be able to make that for your man--to see him wearing it, and know you made it with your own hands. I dunno, kindof sensual, I think.

I love love love, my man, but sometimes I wish he didn't dress like Buddy Holly!!!

Jonni, now you reminded me of another song... "oh oh I look just liek Buddy Holly...oh oh and you're Mary Tyler Moore..."

We are both big fans of Simon and Garfunkle and that is just a great song. I know what you mean about it transporting you to some other place...

Ha! You crack me up! Oddly enough, that's who we are--seriously.
We danced to that song at our wedding....I'm a brunette and wear knee high boots with 60's era skirts and always a hat, and he looks like he was on the Warren Commission.

Hey--I'm going to order some laundry soap--I'm heading over to your etsy shop, now.

hey Jonni,

here is the poem that S and G got the inspiration from for the song:

Oh my--this....
"Without either seam or needlestitch work,
And then she can be a true lover of mine.".. Really magical, don't you think? From the time I was small, and my mother listened to the song, I imagined fairies piecing this shirt together.
and this...such amazing imagery!
""Tell him to reap it with a sickle of leather,
Every season both narrow and twine,
And bind it all up with a pea rooster's feather,
And then he can be a true lover of mine."

I mean, the whole thing is just soooo beautiful and dripping with gorgeous images.

Thanks for making my night! Truly the stuff of dreams!

well the ong is a call and reply from one former lover to another....requesting utterly imposible tasks. I think its great. I think her reply is sassy and hilarious the whole "tell him to come get his shirt..." HA! you cannot reap with a leather sickle, you cannot plant with a single grain of corn, you cannot sew a shirt with no seams....i love it...

that's a really cool song, never heard of it before..but I like the folksy sound to it, and it reminds me of alot of the Irish/Scottish folk songs I have heard.
Cool.

Tasha,
Love to see what it looks like - my dh also not that kind of guy. Everyone in our family, except him, will wear clothes I have made. He doesn't think they are 'real' unless they come from the shop. Oh well! Also love, love, love S & G.
For our next anniversary (next February, but it will take a while), I am doing a cross stitch picture of Klimt's The Kiss. Looks beautiful on the picture.
Good luck with the shirt - can't wait to see it!
Best wishes,
Jayne

You certainly get that it's a call and response, and the sassiness of the gal from the original work, don't you? She is VERY coy, and strong, and so it's interesting to me that she would be portrayed that way in the time in which the song was written.

S & G's song conveys more of a dreamlike quality, (magic maybe?) and conveys longing, at least that's what I have always heard when I listened.

yeah S & G's is that way isnt it....they dont portray the call and response so it is almost an open letter like to the woman....IT is just great though.

I found why they use "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme"

They each denote something:

parsley: I'm yours.
sage: I'm dependable.
rosemary: Remember me.
thyme: I want to have children with you.

I love love love poetry and this is just so fine!

Tasha, for my second anniversary with Dan last year, I made him a pair of cotton flannel pants. I used the fabric that we bought together (while dating) for a huge duvet cover that never came to be. He was shocked to see that I turned it into pants...and of course, there's a lot leftover for other pants or projects too!

I think the shirt idea is fantastic and I also love S&G's tunes. Great thread, and happy anniversary! (Earth Day is a great day to be married!!)

Our particular Earth Day was cosmically cool too...there was a Lunar eclipse that day, plus the transit of Venus AND a meteor shower! All on our wedding day!!! And it was Earth Day to boot!

I think it is a great day to be married too...
