Iron Spring Farm?? Wowie!! He is spectacular! I thought they bred Warmbloods as I had a friend who ended up with a gelding from them...well, I'm pretty sure it was Iron Spring anyway.
At any rate, Teade is gorgeous! Best of luck with the foal!

Winona, my baby isn't due until June 28th. I just got this mare and she had the breeding in her. She is one that I started under saddle five years ago, and kept to breed to another Iron Spring Farm stallion, Goffert 369. Sadly, Goffert passed away in February. From that breeding I got a beautiful colt who is extremely athletic, and will be started under saddle this year. Goffert was a Grand Prix dressage horse. After my baby was weaned three years ago, the mare went back to her owners in Arkansas. I had the opportunity recently to acquire her, and I had to bring her home to Illinois.
I hope we do have that cup of coffee someday! |

Winona, all approved FHANA and FPS breeding stallions have a number after their name. There are only about 92 in the entire world. This is the original Dutch registry and it's North American affiliate. When a person has a horse they believe to be of breeding quality, it's not like here in the US where we just decide to stand them at stud. They must have the correct lineage (a high number of superior individuals in their pedigree up close) and they must go through an approvals process. The approvals process begins with a review of the horse during it's three year old year by judges brought over from Holland. If they deem the stud to be a stallion candidate, he still may not breed. He has to go to Holland for about a year, at a cost to the owner of about $10,000, to be evaluated further. He's judged on the quality of his movement, his performance, different features of his conformation, his breediness, and even his stall manners. If he gets through all that, he's only granted provisional breeding rights. He's allowed to breed to a limited number of mares, and the quality of his get must be high or he will lose his breeding rights. Only a small handful of stallions ever make it this far each year.
In FHANA and FPS, any stallion owner who decides to breed without the sanction of the registry will lose his papers and be kicked out of the association. The same goes for those who crossbreed. It is expressly forbidden in the bylaws. There is another registry based in Germany that does allow crossbreeding, and while they also approve stallions, they won't kick you out if you breed anyway.
There's quite a difference in cost between the two registries. The Dutch registered horses tend to be much more expensive, and on the whole tend to have fewer dinks. They also have a smaller gene pool, so it's a trade off.
When the stallion is given provisional breeding rights, his name he was given at birth is taken away, and the Association picks a new one for him. It's funny; they seem to pick names (translated) like Joe, Ted, Pete, and Herbert. Since they have a gazillion Joes and Petes in the registry, they differentiate by using the numbers for the breeding sires.
So there's a long winded reason for the numbers after the names. |

I have five horses now. I had one mare that recently died, three geldings, one stud colt, and one mare that's bred. The stud cold and the mare that's bred are Friesians. This mare is bred to one of the 22 sires living in the United States. I know that doesn't sound like many, but I can remember a time when there was only one, and then three. My horses are all for my pleasure; I don't do this for tax purposes or consider it a business.
And I've always been passionate about horses! Oh my, I do adore them! |

Yes, he's already registered. Not like I can read the papers, they're all in Dutch. Here's what he looked like as a weanling. Notice that his baby hair is coming out in tough little clumps, and it's sunburned.
Here he is as a yearling. It's hard to get pics of a black horse....
And here are a couple of him last year, as a two year old, complete with bedding stuck to his coat.
He's three this year, but I haven't taken any pics yet. Friesians tend to be ugly ducklings as babies, but mature into beautiful swans. His mane is longer and he's a bit bigger. And he's very sweet and gentle, just like his mama. With any luck, I'll have him gelded next week. |

I only have a minute...but he's gorgeous!! Thanks for the info. I knew a little but you really expanded it for me. Oh, BTW, I'm going to look at horses this week. Looking for Mr. Right or maybe a broodie. Tell you more later as I have to go and hubby is making those 'let's go HOME' noises!! hehehe...
I'm going home now and will be going cross country again late this week. Sometime that coffee klatch will happen betwixt us!!
