Does anyone have experience ironing with flatirons - the sort that one heats on a stove? I have an antique set of three iron bases with a detachable wooden handle (pictured here: http://flickr.com/photos/emmabirdwhistle/432432587/), all appearing to be in good condition. They made these things to last, evidently - they're pleasantly weighty (pleasant until the ironing begins... ). I would like to be able to use them during a Pioneer Week my friends and I are putting together this summer, and I am looking for helpful hints and advice. I remember reading something of a treatise on the use of flatirons of this type, but of course I can't recall where I came across it. Unless it was in Early American Life magazine, which is something I ought to check. In the meantime, has anyone else experimented with this electricity-free mode of ironing?

Thank you for the link, Kim. What a fascinating site! Who knew there was an antique pressing iron museum?
