Hello Ladies!

I'm very excited to announce that our dear friend, Rich Old, has offered his services on a field trip of Paradise Ridge. Below is the news release of the field trip.

Please let me know if any of you are interested in taking the trip. It should be very enjoyable for all!

MaryJanesFarm Offers First Palouse Ecology Field Trip

For those who love native plants and want to explore the ecology of the Palouse landscape, MaryJanesFarm will sponsor a leisurely hiking tour on Saturday, June 23, led by Richard Old, Ph.D. The hiking tour will begin at MaryJanesFarm, the home and business headquarters of organic pioneer MaryJane Butters, 8 miles southeast of Moscow, and wander to adjacent Paradise Ridge.

Old is a fifth generation resident of the area, the acknowledged expert on the flora of the Palouse and surrounding plant communities, and has been leading field classes in this region for over 30 years.

This guided hike is the first ecology field trip sponsored by MaryJanesFarm.

The hike, which is limited to ten participants, will begin at 10am and end in the mid-afternoon. A picnic lunch, catered by MaryJanesFarm, is included. The total cost is only $50 per person. Participants must wear good hiking boots and expect to walk over uneven ground and on some steep slopes.

The hike to Paradise Ridge will include exploration of both the Idaho forest community on the ridgetop and the steppe ecosystem of the Palouse on the surrounding prairie.

It's tomorrow! Jim and I will be getting up early to make the trek to Maryjane's. We'll be munching on homegrown strawberries on the way down. Think I'll also grab a couple of huckleberry muffing from the freezer. Weather is suppose to be great. Perfect. To those who are going see you tomorrow. JoAnn

I am so sad. The funeral was today so I couldn't get back in time for the trek without really stressing the schedule. I hope everyone has a great time. Maybe someday there will be another and I can go on that one!

This was so much fun! Wonderful people, a gorgeous day, and Rich Old shared so much information about native and non-native plants. From edible, ornamental, smelly, deadly, and monster-forming, common to uncommon, it was great...and punctuated with botanical jokes to boot. Informative and entertaining.

This was my first visit to the Farm, and it was very lovely. The lunch...who made that gourmet lunch? Can I get the recipe for the wonderful quinoa salad? We dined in the Plum Pit...what a beautiful setting.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Palouse wild landscape, you really missed something special. It was like taking one of those guided hikes through the rainforest in some exotic foreign country, but no passport required, and no tropical diseases!

Fabulous. Thanks to all of you who made the day possible.

We make a difference.

Ditto on everything Michele said ,PLUS thanks to Michele for bringing two bottles of her wonderful homemade wine--blackberry and raspberry. Now only does she make great wine, but makes beautiful wine labels using her own photographs! hint hint could you scan it to show everyone? Another great hint that Rich Old shared with us after finding a radish plant that had escaped the garden and had gone to seed is that the little seed pods are edible and tasty. JoAnn

It sounds like you all had a perfectly lovely day! I really wish I could have joined you all, but the funeral was important. Maybe next time I can come! I hope the weather was good!

Isn't the Plum Pit fantastic? It is so beautiful and the shade is great! I love how MaryJane makes even the most functional of things beautiful. I can see why it is a favorite place to hang out when on the farm!

I do hope there will be more opportunities to have these wild plants of the Palouse tours. I think there was hope that more people would sign up, and some disappointment that most people aren't willing yet to become eco-tourists within our own country. But hope is a hard thing to keep down. For those interested in future tours, I'd suggest letting both MaryJane and Rich Old know about your thoughts. There are some really interesting bits of the Palouse to see and learn about. I may have to put together a tour of my place in the future.

Thanks JoAnn, you are so kind. I'm going to have to buy a scanner so Rich can help me ID some of my plants. I'm putting together my own list like the one we have for Paradise Ridge. I'll have to give posting pictures another try.

We make a difference.
