We just got our liscence to be foster parents and Monday we will pick up our first placement, a 10-year-old boy. I'm excited, kinda nervous, not sure what to expect. Anyone here have experience with this?

Aunt Jenny does, I'd suggest talking with her.

We have done it quite a bit and adopted alot of our kids out of foster care...none as babies. I would love to answer any questions you have. Each state is a little different..but I think the main thing is to remember that if you don't directly ASK a question of case workers they don't tell you things.Important to know things! That is everywhere. That being said, it is a wonderful experience and I think it has really been wonderful for our family. Just let me know what you want to know.

Aunt Jenny,

We are in sort of a unique situation because we live on an Indian Reservation and all of our foster kids (as long as we live here) will be native. Because of the Indian Child Welfare Act, we are not allowed, as a white family, to adopt them. Almost without exception, these kids come from homes that have drugs, alcoholism, gang activity and most likely a lot of racism. So we are not sure what to expect when our new little guy gets here.

Once we move to Arkansas, we are hoping to adopt. The fost-adopt training down there is the same as here in SD so we have been told that our home study will transfer. I would very much like to hear more about your experiences adopting older kids. We would really like to give a home to some of the ones who are not as likely to find forever families. We do have a 2 1/2-year-old and a 6-month-old so we want to be very aware of how it would affect them, what it would expose them to, etc.

There is some of the Indian Foster here in Utah too, although I havn't had that so I understand what you mean...we had training in that..I HAVE dealt with kids from homes with alcoholism, drugs and ALL sorts of abuse. Every one is different. One thing I have found..and not everyone feels the same as me...cutting out most of the white sugar helps alot. It isn't easy if you are real sweet eaters. I am not..husband is...put it does help with the ADHD, symptoms from fetal alcohol syndrome and things like that..besides general helping for a calmer atmosphere and healthier eating. It is a little thing that helps me alot. I have one son who just bounces off the walls if he eats sugar at all. It effects us all!!
We have adopted kids at the ages of 3 and 1/2 (he is 10 now) 6 (she is 10 now) 7 (he is 10 now) and 9 (she is 12 now) and almost 15 (he is 22 now) and it has gone very smooth. I know in alot of ways we were very very lucky (blessed) to get the exact kids we got...everyone has fit in fine. I have two "homemade sons" too..they are 29 and 26 years old now and we didn't have foster kids until they were older teenagers so I can't be much help with mixing in foster kids and your own kids. We did get one daugher older than the son who had been with us for several years without any problems...I think it all depends on personalities too. I am very routine oriented and pretty structured. They know what to expect and I think that helps alot.
I have loved adopting older kids who really need a deserve a forever family.
I sure wish you good luck. I bet you will do just great!
