i'm alison and my partner & i bought an old house on 2 acres of land last year. we have a large lot on one side that used to have a great garden, so we're told, that was tended by willie, our resident spirit and former owner of the house. at this time it is just a field of grass, but i envision a good size garden lush with all the yummy veggies i remember from my grandma's farm. i found maryjanes farm a few years ago but didn't have the room or time to garden, sew or cook... but now, my life has changed for the better and coming back to these boards and reading all the chatter feels like coming home... its something in my heart and thats as good as i can explain it. i have perused the boards and havent found anyone in or near the charlotte area... is there anyone out there close to me? i would love to either start or join a farm girl chapter... my interests and skills currently include: gardening (veggies, herbs, flowers), cooking, sewing, jewelry making, carpentry (not a skill, but an interest)... maybe more... but for now, that will do. i'm looking forward to getting to know all of you over time. thank you to maryjane for creating this space, its wonderful!

Hi, Alison. Your place sounds wonderful! How old is your house? Are you two doing restoration? That's been an exciting adventure for my dh and me. It's good to have you here.

thank you for the welcome! our house was built in '48, so not too terribly old, but has the feel of a old country farm house. it was pretty much stuck in the 50's/60's as far as style goes, and we're updating it as our finances will allow, which so far has been slow. there was carpet over hardwood through out the 1st floor and we ripped that up late summer... that in itself made a HUGE difference... the floors aren't in the greatest condition in the kitchen, dining and hall areas so we are planning on painting and distressing the floors ourselves and then finishing with a coat of polyurethane. we have given most of the downstairs a fresh coat of color... would you believe that the walls had NEVER been painted? thanks again for the welcome!

Ali - I understand about working when you have money to do each project - we've been doing the same thing. And I can't imagine people NEVER painting their house!LOL- Well, at least they didn't put up 5 or 6 coats of wallpaper for you to remove! :D We do most of the work ourselves, too. Isn't that the greatest feeling, knowing that you've done it yourself?

Alison, Welcome! So glad you finally joined in! How neat that you found "your" place and that it has room for the things you longed to have! I am thrilled for you! I can't wait to hear about your gardens and your home as you make it into your dream! Making dreams reality are wonderful gifts life allows us! Keep us posted on your progress! I love to garden but do not have one now, love to cook as well and do that all the time! I would love to see the jewelry you make...you should post a picture so we can take a peek. Look forward to seeing you 'round! Hugz! Talitha

| Hello Allison, Good to read about a fellow Tar Heel with that North Carolina kinda feelin about the land. Sounds like you and partner are on the right track with the house and plan for the garden. I have been away from the farm for too long and am so excited to have just discovered Mary Janes Farm by accident. I am new to this website as of today. My husband and I fixed up a farmhouse back in 89 and loved it. Moved to the beach and miss the house and garden. We plan to change that. One thing we did in our old house that looked original was purchase random width pine boards from the builders supply and had it put down with "cut" nails. They are the square looking old timey nails. It looked wonderful. Pine knots and all. Stain and polyurethane. We too, had a spirit in our house. I didn't believe it till I met him early one morning. Story at another time. Looking forward to hearing of progress on your wonderful home. Tracy |
