I think my pattern is wrong but I'm tired and maybe just not doing something right. According to the pattern my main square (light color) should be 6 and 1/2" then I'm supposed to cut the accent (dark color) into 2 and 7/8" squares then cut diagonally. Stitch as shown to make a 8 and 1/2" square block. It's not working out!!
Pattern directions:

cut pieces:

The white is a piece of paper covering the embroidery since this is a gift. I've tried sticking my ruler up to the big square but I can't figure out what size to cut the little squares. Do any of you more experienced quilters know what to do?

I looked at the pattern Heather has and I found an error in the pattern. The second squares should be 2 squares that are cut 4-7/8" and when they are cut in half the diagonal edge is 7 inches across. That is the size needed to make the square-in-a-square using these same directions. (And, cutting 4 squares in half like the pattern says yields twice as many triangles as is needed for the block.) Another suggestion was to use a 5" square cut in half diagonally and then trimming the finished square to the 8-1/2" size.

At least one of the links sent is a completely different way to make the square-in-a-square and would yield a finished square smaller than 8-1/2".

Lol! Thanks, Jean. My mother was always finding errors in knitting and crochet patterns and I find them in quilt patterns.
