So it was a rainy, dreary day here in Indiana. I have been working on sewing some new skirts. I'm not that skilled of a seamstress, and am not very good at using patterns. But my skirts are just 3-5 yards of fabric hemmed and on a drawstring. All straight seams. Today, I decided to make a muslin petticoat to go under them. Was going to be simple, just something utilitarian. But it was soooooo dreary...and then I found some ribbon...and then I realised that my machine could make a pretty scalloped stitch...and then VOILA!!!!

It's pretty enough to wear as a skirt. Patterns do take some practice but plain skirts don't need one.

Thank you! I may attempt to do something similar with a future skirt!

A ruffle on the bottom would be cute

Oh yes, it would. The ones my mama made me before had a ruffle, but they finally wore out and she doesn't like to sew much anymore, so I had to try myself. But I don't know how to do ruffles of that grand a scale. I am not that good at gathering yet. Lol

Cut a strip of fabric two to three times the width of your skirt. Its ok to sew pieces together to make it long enough. Hem one of the long sides. Sew two rows of big stitches along the other long side. Use strong thread. Then just sit in front of your favorite tv show and slowly gather the stitches until it is the same size as the hem of your skirt. Even out the gathers and pin to the bottom of your skirt. Sew it on. It seems awkward at first but it gets easy.

Oh! That sounds not so bad, the way you explained it! I was thinking I would need a pattern, but that was easy to understand. Thank you!

Hannah, that's so pretty. I'd wear it as a skirt. To pretty to hide. I love to wear skirts! Show us more!

Hannna... You Go Girl!!! your petticoat is sweet...
just a wee FYI.. if you go to thrift shops,, peruse through the bed sheets to use as fabric... I often have done that for quilts and dolly clothes, pet bedding, etc... but mostly for crocheting my rag-rugs.. I just scored a queen fitted & flat sheet,,, nearly brand new... for $3.99... now I have tons of fabric to make aprons, and what nots....

Thank you ladies!!! I am such a beginner at sewing and I felt so accomplished! I'm looking forward to making skirts and if any turn out especially lovely, I'll be sure to share!
Grace, that is a wonderful idea for finding cheap fabric, thank you!!!

I really like it! I think it turned out good! And the ribbon on the bottom adds the perfect pop of color! You did a great job.
