I am just beginning to collage with glass and am working with solder. I anticipate I could outgrow working with the inexpensive "biology class slides" that I'm using right now for practice in a relatively short time.

So I've been looking at glass scoring tools. While there are a wide variety of tools available, there appear to be only two types that would suit what I'm looking to do (carve out glass from old windows I can pick up curbside...free.) That means I need either a hand-held dry cutter or a oil-fed cutter.

Any suggestions or recommendations? I would love to hear some feedback from those who have worked with either. I'd love to avoid some of the mistakes that I've made with scrapbooking - buying three or four tools before finding the correct one!

Thanks in advance for any advice... ~ Kaylyn

We have dabbled in stained glass. We use the oil cutter. Have had great results with it. Michele

Michele and Sunshine:

Thanks for your input! I just took the plunge and bought a Toyo pistol grip oil cutter. I figured the oil-fed was the direction I was leaning anyway - and as long as I was going to be using it, I may as well be going it comfortably.

I'll start posting some of my work in about a month on my blog. And Sunshine - you've got what's next on my list: a grinder. Any recommendations you'd like to pass on for that purchase, I would certainly appreciate as the voice of wisdom and experience. (I'm a total idiot here. Glass is a new and foreign medium to me.)

Thanks again, ladies!
