I'm glad he can laugh about your Lucy Moments! I remember when we curled our hair with rollers. My very first machine was my high school graduation gift from my parents. It had a box bottom like Lucy's. I don't remember the color of the machine but it was probably white. I took it to college with me. When I married after my freshman year I took it with me to our apartment, where we lived for one month. Then we moved to Midland, Texas and my machine went along. Does any one else remember the early days of being grown up but having so few belongings they fit in a car with room to spare? After 8 months we moved back here, again my machine moved too. Finally we acquired a few pieces of furniture...mostly hand me downs from my hubby's great aunts and uncles. So then moving became a bit more of a challenge.

My 1st sewing machine was a birthday gift when I was in High School.. It was a simple 'Brother" machine in a raspberry color! Wish I still hade it.

That was an eye catcher wasn't it. I had forgotten about Dippity Do! My machine was all metal and heavy, was yours?

I don't really remember if it was all cast aluminum or part plastic.. it only did straight and zig zag stitches and a simple button hole stitch..
As for the Dippity Do I always used the pink one.. I recall there was a yellow one and green one,, each color represented a 'Hold'.. lol!
Ahh, memory lane!

Memory lane has been fun! I've been taken back to my child hold so many times! How did I learn to sew? My mother decided, when I was 11, that she would teach me because I was going to take homemaking in 7th grade when school began in September. She did not want to be embarrassed. She made me pick out my mistakes. I cried a lot that summer. But finally I had a navy pokadot sleeveless blouse to wear. The Peter Pan collar was not so pretty, so it was a wear at home blouse. When school began, a pot holder was our first project. My poor mother was mortified when she saw mine! I made 40. The bobbins on the machine I was using kept tangling the thread up. It was a messy mess! Next project was something to wear. Mother took me shopping for a pattern and fabric. I made a duster. I made a much better grade. But the most fun...was Ellie! There was an elephant pattern with my duster pattern. I guess Ellie taught me to sew curves, clip carefully and turn. She turned out so cute! I was hooked on sewing! My mother's scrap box was no longer safe. I sewed a lot...lots of mending but lots of sewing for fun. ..like slippers and little dresses for little girls with purses to match. So when I finally took home-ech in high school my junior year, I had greatly improved my skill. My teacher, the same sweet lady from 7th grade, asked me to be her helper. The next year we had a fashion show in the spring. She got a little girl to wear one of the little girl dresses I had made and she sold those little dresses for me! Wow I had money! ( I don't remember how much, but it seemed like a lot to me.)

Marilyn, what a nice teacher you had. We had to make a lined suit one year. Another year a gown. I made my Christmas dance gown. Long emerald green skirt and gold brocade top. It was beautiful. The suit was a corduroy and was nice too. Now they make pillows and shorts. That's why all us old chicks know how to sew, because we did it! Grace, keep making them and you can send everyone one! LoL!

here is another idea for a Mug Rug.. I made it a bit over sixed, about 5x6-ish. I use a product call 'Insu-late' for the batting between the outer fabrics..
I made it about 3years ago for a sweet friend who was going through Chemo.. 3 years later and she is still cancer free! Whoot Whoot!

Very pretty Grace! I've used cotton batting and then for the backing on a mug rug I used a piece of flannel backed vinyl tablecloth. This gives you a moisture barrier! Ask me how I know this is important! Lol!
