The International Herb of Year for 2020 is Rubus spp. Blackberries, raspberries, et al.
There's no room in my wee garden for berries so I'll plant a herb I haven't grown before as a substitute for this year's Jubilee. I would also like to find a container yellow rose to add to the other I two I've planted for the Jubilee. Last year it was "Mrs Oakley Fisher" and the year before that "Republic of Texas". Happy to say both are thriving in there containers.

Yay! Blackberries are our business! We sell Kiowa blackberries wholesale in the Summer. They are healthy and freeze well. I eat some in my oatmeal every morning. Here is a picture from blackberry season~

I'm a raspberry girl at heart, for sure - woo hoo! Can anyone recommend a good link where I can purchase some nice raspberry and blackberry canes online? I have a little room yet in my front yard... I was thinking it might be kind of fun to create a hedge of them instead of putting up a picket or wrought iron fence... Are they difficult to grow? I'm in, for sure! Hugs - Nini

Blackberries grow wild down here in Florida and are usually ripe by early May. That would be a perfect theme for me this year. If we get a good Spring for the berries, I might be able to find a patch with enough berries to make jam. Our blackberries are small so you have to gather a bunch to can anything.

Winnie, wild harvesting berries for jam sounds like fun. Come spring tell us all about it.

Nini, raspberries are super easy to grow, and spread like crazy once established. I would love to be able to grow blackberries, but it is way to cold here. I freeze oodles of raspberries though and am even having a vintner making me a large batch of wine out of last years abundance. Should be ready in time for Valentine's Day.

Nini,
We ordered ours from Ison's - https://www.isons.com/shop/berry-plants/blackberry/kiowa-upright-thorny-blackberry-2-plant/ This is the best price I've found online. Stark Brothers has wonderful products but are more expensive. We used a trellis system much like grapes for easier picking. They do have thorns. The trellis system requires pruning back current year canes so the new primocanes can grow for next year once current year harvest is complete. We started with 625 plants in 2012 and are down to about 600 due to Rosette disease. We cut out those vines and the rest seem good. They are not difficult to grow. If you wanted a few frontyard ones you should have no problem. They grow in zones 5 - 9.
We have a fence around the vineyard to keep deer and bears out of it. They LOVE to snip off the vine!

I ordered a yellow container rose today to celebrate our 2020 FarmGirl Jubilee. It's "Ron's Choice" from Antique Rose Emporium here in Texas. It will be delivered the second week of April and will join my other yellow container roses on the deck.

Natalie, you are so right. I like having the pleasure of selecting a rose; ordering it; and than counting the months till it gets here.

We have wild raspberries, blackberries and wine berries here, which I make jam with. I did a blog on it before, let me know if you all would like the link.
I love berry cobbler, too! Berries are my favorite summer fruit (technically not an herb). Love all kinds. Some are easier to grow than others, and it depends on the season.
Thanks for the info.

I will see if I can start some raspberry plants this summer! I have a playground close by and would be okay sharing if they thrive. Zone 9.

Berries are a favorite! Especially black raspberries, yummy to snack on. Teaching grandchildren to pick last year made many a memory. I tried planting some but they did not grow. Might try again this year.

Wild raspberries grow along our lane. They are delicious. I make jam in my bread machine. So good. Also add to overnight oatmeal and pies too. The thorns hurt like crazy though. Ouch!

Thank you Sara. I will try again, I do not mind going to the mountains to pick but I am trying to get as much growing on my little piece of ground that I can. Also adding to my strawberry patch yearly. It’s still small, the grandchildren keep it picked clean.

Strawberry is my other hope for summer growth! I'm not a green thumb but I love trying! My Sunflowers bloomed and I used them for the table at the Ladies luncheon! It is so rewarding to use the things I grow or make! Mulberry trees used to grow at the trailer park I lived in and I had every mother making treats for our families one year! What fun and memories it was!

Vicki, good luck on your strawberry bed.
I mentioned earlier since I can't grow berries because of too much shade I would go with another container yellow rose. I ordered Ron's Choice from Antique Rose Emporium in Jan to be delivered in April. I figured I could plant a container rose anytime of the year. Well, I was wrong. They sent it to be in late Jan. Seems like that's the time to plant roses in my zone. The other time is in the fall. The rose is doing good and a mild winter has helped it to adjust to my back deck. Hope to see yellow buds later this year.
