I never know how to spell them but I love them !!!!! I will not be able to plant a full garden this year. Still need to do a bunch of landscaping. I have two 50 gallon plastic drums and I wonder if I can plant potatoes in them like you would plant strawberries in a strawberry jar. Drill staggered holes in the drum and plant the eyes. Maybe carrots or beets too. What do you think?

Betty Jo, We plant potatoes in a stack of tires...it sounds really funny, but we yield about 40lbs of them in one stack. Here is how we do it..

plant potatoes in tire...then when the plant is up and has blossomed....add another tire on top, creating a stack, when the plant has blossomed...do the same thing...up to 4 tires tall. I dont know how you can make this process in a barrel, but you should certainly be able to. Get your creativity and ingenuity out and make it happen... Good luck!

I wanted potatoes so bad and had no where to grow them.

I've heard of growing potatoes in a stack of tires before, too. Adding additional tires as the plants gets taller makes it really easy to "hill" the potatoes.
It also works to plant potatoes in a big tub or pail, so long as you are able to hill them. Good idea to drill the holes, since you will need some drainage. What kind of potatoes are you planning on planting? Keep us posted on how you do...

Tires. My DH owns a motorcycle shop and we always have to beg the clients to take their old tires with them and now we have started to charge them for us to dispose of them. So no I can use the tires for Potatoes and earn some extra bucks. Bonus! I'll check out the website too. I'm not sure what kind to plant any suggestions.
