Winnie, if you are ever in my neck of the woods stop by and I'll give you a treadle machine. They are lovely to use--there is rhythm to them that is almost meditation. Most of my machines are in running order. I have a few favorites; one handcrank I keep in our trailer up in the hills (no electricity) and I usually get a quilt top done every year on it. I have been slowly rehoming them as my kids have no interest in them at all. My favorites are machines made by Jones in England. Most of their models were based on Singer patents but far better made then Singer. Singer made the most machines but not the best. Most old machines will work if cleaned, oiled, have the needle set right and are properly threaded.
One of my favorites; it is just so cute but it also sews a nice stitch. It's a c1870 New Home:

It's funny... my daughter has no interest in my vintage collections (machines, irons, aprons, Lucite grapes to name few.).. but... my sister's daughter is all about vintage everything,, from clothing to house décor..
I mentioned my collections to her, to bait her, to see if she would be the 'Keeper' of my collections,, and YES she is and will be.
SO I am happy they will have a future home, once I am old and goofy...
But for now,, mine,,, all mine!!!

I can brew a proper pot of tea and have a great cream scone recipe that I make for Christmas morning. You could visit the machines and pet the kitties.
