In the organic relm we forget to remind people of prevention and protection to our homes. Surrounding your house with the peppermint oil can keep alot of pests and rodents away! Reapply as needed after heavy rain or monthly.

There are many organic ways to be rid of bugs! I'm just trying to stir up some action on this subject. Like keeping stacked firewood away from buildings so termites, ants and critters aren't getting into living spaces. Plus fire hazards.

Here is another tip for picnics! Ants won't go over cinnamon so.. sprinkle it around your picnic table and food areas or tents and they will avoid your stuff for several days till the cinnamon bark loses it's sent and oils!

Vicki, that is fantastic to know. We have plans to go camping this summer with our 3 littles and I can bet they will be just as messy with food as they are at home! This will be a good way to keep those ants away! Thanks for the tip.

I did not know about peppermint oil keeping away bugs. I am going to try it because we always get ants this time of year. I hope it is safe to put it around the sink area.

Denise I am in Florida and have three kinds of ants that will visit if I don't fight them! Mixing 1/10parts oil of peppermint and water is great stuff to mist backsplash and sink area. I'm also a non natural fan of liquid TERO a ant poison that they are addicted to and killes the whole nest! Fire ants are mean! I use the mist as a refreshing spray and I have no pets or children.

Childproof Your Outlets Even If You Don't Have Kids If you have an older home, the exterior walls may be poorly insulated. And when you have poorly insulated walls, the holes that your outlets are in can be areas where the outside cold/heat can enter your home.
A simple solution to this is to install child-proof outlet plugs in any unused outlet on an exterior wall. This will close the gaps and reduce the amount of air that can leak through.
Grill! Here's an easy money-saving tip: Grill in the summertime! When you use your stove or oven to cook, it creates a lot of heat. And in the summertime, it can make your air conditioner work extra hard. If you're not much of a griller, consider cooking meals in a crockpot.
It's not something any of us like to think about or plan for. But when the worst happens, it's essential to know your family and loved ones are covered financially. That's why it's essential to have a life insurance. There is a service called National Family that is now allowing users to get free life insurance quotes from some of the top insurance companies out there. People are shocked at how cheap an excellent policy is after requesting their free quotes.
Give Your Air Conditioner Some Space Just like we need to breathe, your air conditioner needs space where it's getting air easily. Many AC units are surrounded by shrubs that can restrict the airflow it needs to run efficiently. Take a few minutes this weekend and do the following:
Trim up any bushes that are are touching the unit so there is at least 1 foot of clearance
Clean up the ground for any loose debris or leaves
If the outside of the unit has a lot of debris clogging it up, consider having a professional service and clean the unit. Or check YouTube for instructions.

Wiping dish soap on to the windows or mirrors will keep them from getting foggy for several rain or steamy exposures! I grew up on Joy soap for use on the boat but most any dish soap works.

We occasionally have what my grandma called sugar ants. We mix borax and sugar with water and put it on a cotton ball. We lay the cotton balls around the cabinet and within a day the ants are gone! The sugar gets them to eat it and the borax kills them. Plus you can use the rest of the borax to make homemade laundry soap.

I read this morning that cedarwood oil, diluted to a 2% dilution for everyday use for healthy teenagers & adults, will keep away bugs that bite when you apply it to the skin. 1% dilution for little kids & elders. |

Just heard this for those love bugs! Two black bugs joined together flying everywhere in Florida and other places! Use a large white bowl fill half way with water then pour a bit of baby oil in and set it out where you will be. They are attracted to white dish land in the oil and can't get loose! Let us know if this works for you and your family! I won't be able to test it till next fall! I did go through a month of the pest before traveling. Everywhere floating around like pollen is in everything outside. Okay let us know if you try it.

The time for hanging out on the deck is here so let's do a safe check around our porches and patios. Are there nails or screws that need putting back in after the heavy rains swelling up the wood? Did any crack's or trouble areas develope that will need attention to in our paths? Cover uneven and cracked areas with an outdoor carpet to prevent falls. Check for low hanging vines, wires, or branches that could be a Hazzard. Also be sure to clean around the edges of porch and patio to discourage pests as things dry out and the wee things look for summer homes. Have many great summer days and be safe! Remember to always have your fire extinguisher checked, maintained, and kept handy for the grilling or by the fire. Do you know where your first aid kit is and what's in it?

I was driving in wet condition today and wondered if you all knew to not use your cruise control in the rain? The wheels slip on wet pavement easier when they are on cruise control. Be safe travel well.

Wow! Lots of info. I am curious as to how the peppermint works. Do I just spray it outside around the house? Does it work for spiders? I have a phobia about spiders. What about ticks?

Peppermint is an oil and sticks to rodents burning thier moths when they go to get clean. It with block sent paths of ants and stick to but might not bother spiders. You can spritz your inside and outside of the house without worry. Small animals dont like it and if it got in the eyes it might burn. Spiders like dark places and are hunters so a clean well lit area isn't going to attract them. Spiders are harder because they usually set up a home and stay hidden except to hunt. Try not to get worked up over them they do a good job of pest killing.

I have never tried cedar oil before. I'll have to try it. Does anyone know an organic fruit tree spray? I need to get my trees sprayed but don't want to use chemicals on them

Thanks for these great tips, Vicki!! We love natural ways to handle everyday problems. Always the author, I have to ask if you ever thought of writing a book. I think a daily natural tip to match the month/season would be fantastic! :-) Anne
