Can any farmgirls out there help me?
As said a while back, I am on an old farm and FIL was here before me, and not sure of before him....anyway, I found a cast iron dutch oven, with lid, and it is in pretty rough shape. It's still thick, but brown, not black. Okay, here is the question, what is the best way to clean this poor baby without ruining it. I would love to be able to use it.
I was thinking of washing with steel wool, then coating in oil, but I do not want to do anything, until I know that I will not ruin it.
HELP!!!!
BTW~This is one of many little treasures being found around the property.
It breaks my heart to know that other people, these things mean nothing.

Thank you Kim, this site is great!
It actually is close to what I was thinking of doing, but I love that I know I will be doing the right thing.

Stick it in the fire in your fireplace or in your burn pile outside. It will burn off the old gunk then you can coat it with oil and use it.
That is what my grandmother told me anyway.........

the latest issue of Hobby Farm Home has a terrific article on rescuing old cast iron skillets/cookware. it's extremely informative.
