Do any of the rest of you write about your farm for income????

Perhaps a column to the local paper or articles to magazines?

I'm editor of a small weekly and I used to freelance a great deal. I'm thinking about starting back to freelancing more and one good place for me to start will be writing about our experiences here on the homestead (when I freelances so much before, our children were little and I wrote wrote wrote for magazines dealing with kids such as Living with Teenagers, Living with preschoolers, etc. and I wrote for music magazines since that was my college major....

But now I'm so immersed in the simple life and would like to share....Jackie Clay at Backwoods Home is kind of my idol because she just writes about the wonderful things she does on her homestead! And her articles are so informative!

Any other writers out there????

You can bury a lot of troubles digging in the dirt!

I write about farming and am also an editor. I've been writing since I was 10 years old. I wish I still had that story. Right now more of my income comes in from editing than writing.

Country Family Magazine is looking for writers. Their writers guidelines are posted on their website. www.countryfamilymagazine.com

Thanks for the info regarding Country Family magazine. I have worked in the past as a freelance writer writing for a local family magazine and have also been published in a Christian Woman's publication. Recently I wrote and article about my gardening club (the first thing i've written in 4 years) and it was published in a gardening magazine. WOOHOO!!! I would like to write more for gardening or Homestyle magazines. I am also interested in publishing my own newsletter. About what? I'm not clear on that yet.
I'm new to the Farmgirl Connection (like yesterday) and I've already got a ton of ideas and inspiration. Thanks so much.

I don't know that I am a writer. My experience is mostly with research papers and artist's statements. We are thinking of developing a website though, with blogging about our experiences, webcams of work and animals. We'll set it up right away so that the website will document our farm life from the beginning including all of the work we will need to do to get everything up to snuff. The barn needs to be enclosed, there is no fencing, etc. We want it to show all it takes to make a farm life. I can't wait. We move in next week.

Laura, that's an excellent idea! I think it will be helpful for people who see only the romanticism of farming before they get to the farm. Seeing the reality of this lifestyle will lessen some of the surprises. I never in my life imagined I'd be doing mouth to mouth on a dying lamb or helping a vet with a c-section before I found myself in the position. I'm sure I'd have been more helpful if I'd had any idea of what I was getting into.

If you can write research papers you can write how-to articles. I find those extremely helpful. They're very popular at the magazine I work for.

I'm a freelance writer/editor these days since arrival of Jr. (now 3.5 yrs).

I haven't written anything about the farm life as a freelancer, YET! It's a big goal, but the regular paying gigs plus son, DH, horses, goats, general farmcare, etc. don't allow for much time to look for new work.

In past life as a trade magazine editor, I found a few opportunities to use farm stories (like stacking hay when the sun shines) in editorials. The readers loved it, and I got lots of follow-up questions. Farmlife always gave me something interesting to talk about at conventions...I'd be in Fla., and DH would be at home chopping ice from water tanks!

As a newspaper reporter in small-town Indiana, I got to do lots of fun farm stories -- the county fair, the last dairy farmer in the city limits, planting season (the farmer thought it was 'cute' that I wanted to drive the tractor, and let me), etc. It was at the paper that I got back to my girlhood dream of being a farmgirl AND got my first horse while working weekends at a stable (newspaper reporters have fun, but don't get paid much!)

It's part of life's circle that now my writing helps support the farm and I get to stay home to do it.
