I feed the birds faithfully every morning. They have a suet feeder, thistle feeder, sunflower seed feeder, general feeder, two spots on the ground for a seed mixture for the ground feeders, and peanut butter and seeds spread on the bark of the trees. Not only do I get lots of birds of all kinds, including a pileated woodpecker, but I also end up feeding black, gray, and red squirrels and right before dark I get a doe and her two yearlings. They usually vist every night and eat up what's left on the ground. Something took the suet feeder down the other day, opened it up, took out the suet, and left it under a tree. There were some large prints in the snow, but I couldn't make out if they were bear prints or not. Anyway, it seems that it's not just birds getting the benefits of my feeders. The critters eat better than I do, but I just love watching them. |

I had a clever squirrel taking my suet feeder and would bring it up the tree and pop it open.I thought it was a racoon doing it until I watched him one day. I ended up wiring the feeder to the pole so he couldn't pull it off the hook. I got a squirrel feeder after that. They are funny too watch. Alicia

I love having bird feeders up, also. We had squirrels take suet-a few squirrel baffles and wire took care of it. We've also had bears-not frequently-just occasionally. Usually they just move on after a few days. We did have one that besides knocking everything over, took one of my thistle feeders. I never would have thought they liked thistle that much. I found the feeder a year later in the woods, with great big teeth marks in it.
I have to admit it. I love seeing all of the wildlife around here, even if they are pests sometimes! |

Do you all make your own suet? When I was reading this post it made me think about trying to make some and put out at my place.

Jennifer, my friend Jim lives on 140acres and has bears in his woods. One day one of them came to the yard, took the suet feeder and the seed feeder and just carried them away. Jim found them later at the edge of the woods ripped apart. I know it's not funny to have to buy new ones, but I laughed like crazy just picturing this bear going "shopping" in his yard. Shelle, no, I don't make my suet because I can buy it for $.99-$1.29 a cake and get lots of different kinds and the birds seem to love it. I pick up a bunch when I go to buy the seed. |

We've had a visitor that I am sure is a black bear at our bird feeders. We hang feeders with sunflower seeds and some with thistle on wrought iron shepherds crooks. One morning I went out to find that one Shepherd's crook had been bent over to the ground and the thistle feeder was ripped apart in the woods. I am guessing that the only thing large enough or strong enough to bend wrought iron would be a bear. I only wish I could catch him in the act!
