I started my patchwork banner yesterday. Cut out the pattern pieces and cut one banner. Liked the way it looked so will precede with the four other triangles. Only need five triangles to hang on the back of metal garden bench on front porch. I'm using scrapes of wool so they will be colorful and no two alike.

Wow!!!! There are so many ideas here. I love every one of them. I have never made a quilt. I am kind of nervous about it as it looks so complicated. Paper quilting sounds interesting too. I have so much to learn. Thank all of you for the wonderful ideas.

I think I am going to go with a garden flag this year. Not sure how I am going to do it yet but will be putting it on my list.

I have never quilted before. Can someone please help me out with an easy project to start with? I would like to try quilting by hand.

Lori, a simple 9patch is a good beginner.
make 9 equal size squares and stitch them 3 across and 3 down.

You can cut the 9 squares of random fabric or. 1 Color starting out in the darkest tone and each square in a lighter shade.
Or a combination of solids and prints.

Just have fun.

Love your quilted table runner, Grace. And I Love Love Love the quilt theme - I bet I can come up with something for this theme. I only have an entire houseful of fabric to work with.

I think I will finally put all the squares from the 10" square farm-themed fabric swap together for something. And there are more of the swappers out there who can do the same thing. Now let me go find them.

Another simple ideas for a beginner is just sewing 5" or 6" squares of fabric together for a small or large project. Scrappy quilts are my favorites.

Also, did you get all of the snow they say that Seattle got?

Here are eight "quilted" reusable "paper" towels - one 10" square and one 10" piece of flannel put together right sides together, stitch 1/4" around leaving 2-1/2" space for turning, press, edge stitxh anad stitch from corner to corner. Great for small cleanups and throw in the wash to use again. Marilyn gave me the idea. I made the with some of my farmgirl 10" squares from the swap. Love them.

I spotted a cute and easy peasy craft-quilt idea..
using felt or wool or cute printed cotton or even paper...

you can use 2 cloth pins for the hanger or an old orphaned knitting needle...

you can make mini banners or even a larger one ...
Or ad cute buttons or yoyo or what ever in the center to bling it up..

I finished my patchwork banner today. Was so pleased with it I can't wait until our Jubilee to hang it on front porch bench so I hung it on a large mirror in my living room underneath a bittersweet swag. Come May it may not make it to the front porch. May have to make another one.

I am making a patchwork square table runner using farmgirl-themed fabrics - sewinng/knitting, farm animals, kitchen, food, aprons, calico-like small prints, etc.

I can;t wait to see your banner, Sara. And that's a cute idea for a banner, Grace.

Quilt on, Grace.

Linda, door is always open and the kettle on. Your patchwork table runner sounds just right for a FarmGirl Jubilee.

Linda, I'm glad you made some cloth paper towels, I need to make more, but I have used up most all of my 10" squares. Guess I need to cut some and begin sewing.
paper quilts...I love to make paper quilts with kids. When I taught art each year we made them when the third grade classes read about the Code Quilts of the Civil War! It was such a fun learning experience.

I love reading about the Underground Railroad quilts that were coded to help people find safe havens. I still have plenty of my squares to usee for quilts, cloths, or other useful things.

I haven't seen any more fabric-related swaps since we stopped doing the mini apron swaps, 10" square swaps, and swaps for aprons, clothespin bags, and table rununers. I hosted those. The only ones were the Shilly Shally swaps last year.

Grace, I love that idea of paper quilt hangings. Really clever and cute!

I love hearing about all the quilt plans and inspirations. I am still working on what is possible for me to do as I am not a skilled quilter . I do better with the actual quilting with needle and thread than putting one together.

Linda, there is a wonderful example of an Underground Railroad quilt here in a museum in central Florida that was used by the slaves seeking passage north. The docent in the museum explained every color, pattern location and a map of the journey in her talk. It was fascinating!

here is another cute idea..

I bought this sweet 'coaster' at the Quilt show,,
underneath is a thin piece of wood, cut out bits of fabric to create the 'quilt block' and a thin piece of glassand bound together with silver aluminum tape (you can buy 'this tape in the art glass (stain glass) section at Hobby Lobby or it you have left over aluminum tape from a Ducting project, and trim it down to size ).
How nice it would be to make a set of 4 different designs and gift them or use them yourself as 'coasters'.

the fabric pieces are cut and then tacked down to the wood with a glue stick.
or..
another idea is to glue the fabric pieces to the wood base and then apply several coats of Mod Podge to decopauge' and then once dry apply a layer or 2 of varnish to make it water proof.
