I am making the Harvest Apron on page 223 of MaryJane's Ideabook.
I am on step 3 of the assembly where it tells you to run "gathering" stitches on the upper edge (of apron) through both layers.

could someone please explain a gathering stitch? Is it simple a long stitch or is there more too it?

Thank you!

It is a long running stitch if you do it by hand then you pull the thread to gather the fabric try to keep the stitches even.

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe my blog http://sunshinescreations.blogspot.com

Bonnie- For the lazy girls method of gathering...set your stitches to the largest setting and run two rows next to each other. Tie off the threads at one end and pull ONLY the top OR bottom thread to gather. As long as your tension isn't too tight it works like a charm! And the two lines of stitching/ gathering help keep it together when you stitch so the gathers don't go all wonky or get caught up in the seam. Tie off the ends when you have reached the right gathering dimension, pin and stitch! Easy breezy! A little snip at each end and you can pull the basting/gathering thread out by hand !
