Have you seen those faux foods that look real and are used in all sorts of displays in stores? For our upcoming celebration here at MJF of the Farmgirl Apple Festival ,during the month of September, I tried creating a faux apple pie for my old stove. After looking up a number of ideas, I decided to use a salt dough recipe where you can add cinnamon or other spices. I debated whether whole wheat or white flour was best to use, and decided on whole wheat because sometimes I think the white flour ends up looking fake. The pie has a dough base and lattice crust and fits in an old enamelware 8" pie dish. It smelled wonderful while it was drying in the oven for about 2 hours too. When the pie cooled down, one recipe said to give it a coat of Mod Podge to add a bit of a shine and make it look more real. Here is my result.
Here is an old photo of the old stove staged on Thanksgiving morning when I baked some pumpkin scones in my regular over first. I think this new pie would be cute in the oven as well as on the top like it currently is located.
Sometimes it is just fun to play when it is hot/humid/and rainy outside.
Dreaming of Fall and real apple pies!!

Looks beautiful Winnie, Love your stove. Wish we had a rain filled day. So parched but very humid here.

Winnie---that is the most beautiful pie I have ever seen! It looks so real. How creative you are. If only my real apple pies looked this pretty. You go girl! Love the stove. We have one from the 1920's that we cook on out on the porch. I do love old ranges.

Winnie, that looks fantastic! It looks so real and so yummy! Was it pretty easy to make? And did you put anything on the inside?

Thanks everyone! It was a made up idea and one never knows how such a thing will work out.
Barbara, I think this stove is from the 1930s. It was out on a porch, apparently, and has rust damage in the oven box that makes it not useable for baking. I was told , however, that the 3 gas ranges on top worked fine. I have never tried it out, but recently i have been thinking of finding a place to restore it and have it back into proper and safe working order. I would use it as my primary stove in a Farmgirl second!! LOL!!
Krista, the salt dough was easy to use because you just roll it out like any pie crust. I rolled it all out pretty thin because I wanted it to dry thoroughly. I did fill the inside with feed corn before I added the lattice on top in order to keep the top puffed up. Then after it all dried, I shook the corn out through the lattices and placed it back in the oven to dry for another 30 minutes to make sure that all the little spaces were dried out.

That's a great idea! I was wondering how you made it stay up. I am going to have to try this sometime. I need to get back to my creative side. Lol!
