When I was little we went to a big country fair in the spring time. It was only an hours drive away, but I loved going there so much, it seemed to take an eternity. Even then, I think I was a farmgirl at heart. The first thing we would get were big pieces fried dough and coffee (ours was always milked down but yummy) Then a fruit cup. I loved to watch the animal judging and to look in all the cages and fences and pet all the animals. Then we would go see the hand built items like furniture and the hand sewn things like quilts and clothing. Then we would get to pick a piece of pie from the hundreds who had entered the contest. OH YUM!!! I saved my pennies just so I could bring a piece home. That and the fried apple fritters. And one LARGE order of homemade lemonade. YUMMMMMMMYYYYYYY!!!!
We had to park out in a farm field and muck our way to the fair. We always wore our old sneakers to walk in. And my souvener was usually a pressed penny. Miss those days. Can't wait to get back to Texas to start going again. |

Growing up in the heart of farm country on the Canadian prairies, the fall exhibition/fair was a huge deal. There were big barns on the grounds with all manner of baby animals and critters you could see and even as a child, I remember the huge displays of quilts, embroidery and baked goods.
To this day the smell of diesel and fried onions takes me back to the good old fair days...lol

The sounds, the smells and the intense temperatures....wow, was it always hot! I remember the rides mostly, but I also remember visiting the arena to watch the horses perform. We used to love searching out which animal was there with a new baby, too. Also, there was an air-conditioned hall with vendors that was a great reprieve |

Our county fair is right in my hometown. My best friend date a guy that always ran in the demolition derby, so that was always big.
Now days, it is literally in my back yard. When we moved here the neighbors were all like "You'll hate fair week!". But we don't. We can listen to the music, hear all the judging when I can't make it over there, and it's JUST one week.
I look forward to this year because I have my first 4H group and we will be entering projects in the fair.

i'm sure i have been to 'county fairs' when i lived in the 'city' .. but the first one i reeeeely rememer is when we lived in annapolis .. and visited a booth by a local 'quilt shoppe' COTTONSEED GLORY! (isn't that a cute name!) i discovered BERNINA sewing machines ... and my love for sewing and making dollies blossomed!
since moving to Kentucky, I am involved in our county fairs each year .. even enter my dolls .. and they have always won a blue ribbon. what a fun connection of county fairs so far apart.

I didn't ever go to the county fair but I did go to the BIG E which was the "eastern states fair" That was always a lot of fun. I remember they always had a model log cabin set up and it is still my dream to own a log cabin someday. I always loved walking through them. Of course Fried Dough was a favorite of mine and french fries with vinegar. In vermont we had this amazing festival called the Quechee Balloon festival. the crafts were amazing and I even won a balloon ride one year. A REAL ride NOT a teathered one. I got the most amazing pictres of my town!

Our county fair lasts about 2 wks. The rides only last about 1 wk. We spend a week showing our livestock. I really love our county fair for the kids get to have their projects judged and even the adults. We have everything from arts and crafts, flowers, baked goods, to canning . At the end of the week we have the rodeo and I always ride in it. Haven't won it yet but hey, there is this year. Just running barrels in front of your family and friends and hearing them cheer you own , its awesome.
