I finally received Mary Jane's book from Amazon. I was given an Amazon gift certificate and ordered this book and a few others right off. But I guess the MJ book was on back order. So it finally arrived yesterday!!! I was up until 2 a.m. thumbing through it. I finally decided every page had something I wanted to soak up so I started at the first page and I am now on page 26. I feel like it was written by my grandmothers and their mothers and their mothers. Little bits of information meant to be handed down from one generation to another. I am in love with a book.

Isn't it a great book? I did the same thing when I got mine...all a flurry in flipping pages, but then I realized I needed to be methodical about it. Every page is a treasure!

Mary Janes book is very good, but I couldn't live without The Encyclopedia of Country Living: An Old Fashioned Recipe Book by Carla Emery. Plus Whole Foods for the Whole Family by La Leche League, and 1/2 dozen herb books.
We learned to butcher chickens with Carla, made our first yogurt with WF and identified plants and used them for food and medicine. I really was surprized how "slick" MJ book was when I got it. I guess I expected it to be on recycled paper. But I love the glossy, beautiful photographs that you can almost smell what's in them. I love the magazines & the book. They really are the modern farmgirl!

Kristine, I understand the distinction you made between MJ's book and many of the others. While some books are packed with tons of information, MJ's book seems to do best in conveying the charm and the beauty of simple country life. The photos and the lighting are exquisite, and have that magical quality that takes you back to a simpler, quieter time.
Most of the stuff in that book I already knew, or it was stuff had no real interest in. But I still love the book for how it makes me feel about these things. That, to me, is what sets this book apart. |
