For some reason, yet known, I'm having nose bleeds. I had two on Sunday that kept me over the sink for 20 min. or more, and a little one this morning. I did go the doctor yesterday and nothing is wrong with my nose or sinus, he took some blood and is checking to see how my blood clots, will find out on Friday. Has anyone ever had such long nose bleeds, I also had small clots during the time spent over the sink. I've tried pinching my nose, helps some, ice does too, but I'm so afaird cuz I don't know when to expect it and sure don't want to have one out in public. Any thoughts?

Yes my family has long ones but we have a bleeding disorder. We carry around nose clamps because after about 5 minutes you can not hold a tight enough grip any more. If you are pinching the nose to stop bleeding lean forward not back if you lean back the blood is running down the back of your throat and will upset your stomach and possibly make you though up tarry looking blood very gross. If you lean forward the blood actually helps build up pressure in the nose and clots where you are bleeding. On the ice subject best to put the ice in your mouth not on your nose this helps more. Also keep your house humid helps. There is stuff called nosebleed QR you get it over the counter at places like albertsons. It helps you form a clot and keep it. We keep a few boxes on hand at all times. Having a bloody nose in public is nothing to be embarrassed by my kids keep a spare t-shirt in their backpacks so once they have the bloody nose under control they can clean up as if nothing has happened. If you are holding pressure on your nose keep the pressure constant for 5 minuets after that wait 15 minutes to see if it starts up again if it does repeat but add about 3 minutes each time you have to repeat up to 15 minutes. If your nose is under a clamp for 15 minutes and you have tried nosebleed QR go to the emergency room they should be able to help you. Try not to blow nose for two days after a bleed to give it a little bit of time to heal.

Hey there SUe. Do you remember when Dad had all of his nose bleedS? You might want to see if you have thin blood. Nose bleeds can mean so many diffrent things. Keep onto the doctor, Hope you get better soon. I dont have them. DO you have any headacks with them? Keep me posted. Love ya Allison

Thanks Sunshine, I feel better knowing someone out there has had them for long periods, my hubby was getting worried when it wouldn't stop after 20-30 min. I do pinch my nose and lean forward, everytime I'd stand up some would go down my throat and upset my stomach, not fun. I'll have to look for that stuff if they continue, hopefully I'll know more on friday when I go get my blood test results. I'll have to try the ice in the mouth trick too. Allison, I barely remember Dad having them, were they long like mine? Or just regular nose bleeds? My test results will tell me if my blood clots ok or not. I'll keep you posted!

Hi, Sue - I am prone to nosebleeds in the winter when the air is so dry. I haven't had a long-lasting event, though, like you. Are you by chance taking aspirin regularly - that might thin the blood just enough for a prolonged bleed.
I've tried to find a suitable exercise video for women my age...but they haven't made one called "Buns of Putty" |

My daughter has had issues with nosebleeds and this is what we've found that helps (during) -- lean forward and pinch the bridge or a little ice, as well as putting your finger inside your upper lip and putting pressure on the frenum (the little "string" that keeps your lip attached) for some reason this seems to work. Also taking homeopathic Phosphorus.

ps-- I had looked into buying the nosebleed powder as well but haven't been able to find it here.

just to mention something that perhaps no one else has mentioned before..
exposure to molds/mildews in either a home or a workplace can cause nosebleeds along with head aches.
We lived in a trailer in the country back when my daughter was about 6 yrs old and unawares to us..the duct work under the trailer was full of leaves growing mold and mildew..
but we did not know until it stopped working and we had the landlord hire a air conditioning repair service..but even then the landlord did not pay to have the duct work cleaned..
and my husband later developed a severe sinus problem...and has been dealing with it ever since..is the exposure to the mold/mildew to blame??? I do think so to a degree...(plus the fact that we live in a paper mill town...uggh)
Anyhow..long story short...my daughter was having almost daily nose bleeds and we did not know why. Until I did some research after we moved away from the trailer.
I'm happy to say that it is now a rare occasion for her to have a nose bleed.
But..this might be something for you to look into.

My youngest son had frequent nose bleeds when he was growing up. He would sit up in bed in the morning and his nose would start to bleed. We finally had an ear/nose/throat specialist cauterize a thin place in a vein in his nose and no more problem. Also, in the winter your nose can be so dry inside. Putting a little vaseline on the lining of your nose with a Q-tip helps keep it moist and prevent nosebleeds from dryness.

| A friend was just talking to me about this. Some in her family would get nose bleeds in the winter. She made a tea of dried nettles, and the problem went away. They drank it twice a day. She discovered this by accident. She had a friend try it, and it helped them too. Makes me want to find out more on herbal remedies. Michele |

When I swam 4 days a week and lived in a colder climate, I used to get nose bleeds ALL the time, I mean real gushers like what junebug is describing. At one point it got so bad, I thought about having the blood vessel cauterized.......but the thought of something really hot and unpleasant up my nose made me just deal w/ the problem instead.....that and learning to carry a wad of tissues in a pocket.
There was one shirt in particular that always seemed to get covered the worst. Thank goodness at the time I dicsovered the wonders of cold water and pre-treaters!
These days it's no where near as bad, although I used nasal spray for allergies for about a year and was fearful that the middle part of my nose was going to rot away when the nose bleeds started again, so I quit the spray and started on an oral decongectent only as needed.
I feel for anyone who has this problem. It is nasty, and very inconvenient |

Well, my blood work came back just fine, no problems with clotting. I did have four nose bleeds on friday that pretty kept me at home over the sink all day. I did try some saline spray which just made it bleed, I am keeping vasoline handy as it does help some. The only next thing to do is have a MRI done on my sinus to see if I may have a tumor in there, but since our insurance got changed the first of the year, it hasn't been the best about covering my visits, so the doctor doesn't want to strap us down with a big bill yet, so I'm gonna wait and see how it goes. I'll look for some nettle tea and I'm taking Olive Leaf too which is good for sinus infections so maybe ?? Thanks for all your input, I"ve learned alot about nose bleeds.

my genetic disorder 3 people in 100 have it and it is supper hard to diagnose. Sometimes 10 or more tests as your mood messes up the test as well as other outside effects. It is called Von Willenbrands Disease. This is not a normal test you would have taken as it is a few thousand dollars to take the 5 tests involed. Because of the cost and how hard a test it is to take most doctors don't do this one. They do clotting times and th elike which are archaic and shouldn't be done anymore. So will test for the factors in hemophilia ( yes all rumors aside girls can have it too not just boys).
