Hello Everyone!
2018 is almost here and a new challenge would be fun to kick off. A Nifty Thrifty 2018! This challenge is easy. Anyone can take part and we will all benefit from having each other to cheer us on!

The challenge is to eliminate the clutter we all have. It's about becoming more aware of our actual needs from our wants and this challenge is perfect for this.

Start with just one room in your home. It might take you only a day in some rooms and maybe months in another (think of your craft room! Yikes!) Go through your room and anything that is in it you have stacked up in a corner, tucked under a chair, sitting on a shelf, or piled in a closet, pull it all out. Assess what it is and assign a name to it. It will be one of four: Get it done (projects that need finishing), Find a New Home (it is still useful but not to you), Repurpose (use an item in a different way) or Wrong Place (it belongs in a different room!).

Once you have done this, the next steps are to put them where they need to be.
1: Wrong place, move these immediately into the proper room.
2: Get it Done, These take priority to get them finished up. You need to make this a priority. No more "new projects" until these are done!
3: Re-purpose: Put these items to work in a new way.
4: Find a New Home: This will be fun, you can sell, barter or swap these for things you really need.

As we go through this process for each room in our homes, it will help us to rediscover many things we have forgotten about, re-purpose many items saving us time and money, help us to finish up our projects that have been languishing for way to long and give us some fun while bartering, trading and swapping our unneeded items.

Who's interested in a Thrifty New Year Challenge??

I decided to work on my office first. WOW!! I did not know how much "Stuff" I had "stored" in here! 18 boxes to the basement, three or four boxes to the craft room and one large bag of trash later. . . I'm exhausted!! LOL!!

Way to go Joanna! I really need to do this. My husband and I have already talked about doing this to our basement rooms. This is where everything goes to hide and be out of the way. Our goal is to have all 3 rooms sorted and cleaned up before the baby comes. The family room downstairs is unfinished and needs carpet. We are hoping to clean that room out, put some carpet in, and move all the toys downstairs to make a playroom for the boys. This will help with the clutter we have upstairs. We will join in your challenge.

Krista,
So happy you are joining in!! I am so amazed at all I got accomplished so far in just 4 days. Finding things like a full box of file folders so I didn't have to spend money on more, or discovering where a project has been "hiding" for way to long that can now be completed!

I am so excited you are joining in on this challenge. Keep posting on your progress, even if it is just one thing you did, that is all a step in the right direction.

I would like to join. We have a storage locker for which we pay $65 a month. I want to go there and start going through it. Of course, not everything in there is mine. I want to see if I can get it cleared out to fit into a smaller size, and cheaper, locker.

Joanna, great topic. The week between Christmas and New Years I deep cleaned a couple of closets and one bookshelf. I find de-cluttering is a lot like dieting I have to have the mindset to do it or it just isn't going to get done.

Hearing other FarmGirls success stories does help to get me going.

I joined in on this challenge yesterday... and started with my kitchen. It is a slow process as I need to nurse Jenni every two or three hours, but at least that gives me an hour+ break ;) I'm actually putting contact paper down on the shelves as I go. Almost all the upper cabinets are done... I think the only two upper ones left are the ones above the fridge and the one above the stove. I need to buy more contact paper in order to keep going.

I slowly started over the weekend. I organized and untangled my crochet yarn, broke down and recycled a bunch of unused boxes, and gave my neighbor some baby boy 1st birthday decorations. Not much but I already feel better and a little less cluttered! I'm excited to see all the others joining in! This will help be my motivation.

Today's decluttering-deep cleaning goal is to tackle my bathroom and the hall/guest bath. The hall bathroom isn't used much except that's where Annie's food and water bowls are. Linen cabinet in there does need a good going through and straightening.

My bath is fairly neat except for one drawer that seems to catch everything I don't know what to do with. Will have a go at it.

One cabinet - one drawer - one closet at a time is the way I roll.

Shannon, Wow, that is great that your oldest wants to join in. You can encourage each other and maybe get more done in a shorter period of time. A win - win in my book!

Oh I sooo need to do this... where to begin...

Since we are still in the moving-in process... I suspect this time we will be more methodical in moving things into the house,,, and I suspect some things will have to be re-boxed and put out in the garage or barn,,, while other stuff goes to our local Thrifts and Habitat for Humanity store...

Wish me luck! lol!
Hopefully I won't be a hoarder and save everything...!lol!

Hi! I'd like to join but want to clarify, is this challenge something we are working on through the whole year or just this month? I have already made myself a schedule of certain rooms or areas of the house to work on each month this year. I tend to try to do too much at once and get frustrated and give up so I decided this year "slow and steady wins the race."

Here is my plan:

Jan: Kid's floor (two kids' rooms, guest room and bathroom)
Feb: Craft
March: Kitchen + Mud Room
April: Living room (including all the books)
May: catch up month
June: Storage closet
July: Master bed and bathroom
August: Dining (and small sitting area and school area)
September: Garage, yard, and basement (this is mostly hubby)
October: Catch up month
Nov & Dec I haven't scheduled anything because they are always so busy

Sabrina, I love the organized schedule especially the time to catch up and (maybe) regroup. I have decided that my first project will be to reset and organize the shelves in the kitchen. We have a small kitchen with a single tall, narrow cabinet. Once I get the shelves' heights adjusted, I can find space for the stuff sitting on the counter of the separate pantry cupboard. I will post some pictures.

Hi Sabrina,
This is as long as we want it. Some will jump in for a month, others this will take us all year to make a dent! Love that you have a schedule to get it done, very well thought out. Keep us posted on your progress!

I need to declutter my pantry. We have a very small house and I think things get moved from one room to the next. I can start in the pantry!

I'm with you Sabrina! I get very overwhelmed if I try and do everything all at once. I have a few rooms with deadlines but the rest will come sometime this year but I will get to them. Your schedule is very nice. I should make me one similar to it.

Joanna, job well done on de-cluttering your desk.

Tiana, pantries are always a good place to start.

Cleaned off my computer table/desk the other day and so far it has remained that way. It is a struggle not to pile it up.

Checking in to see how all of you are coming along! Just post what you are working on today, even if it's just figuring out where to start!!

I've moved into the sewing room. . . this I have a feeling will be the most time consuming project of all. Since I need to sew daily and try to clean up and unclutter too!!

I have a couple of books that my toddler ripped pages or lift the flaps in, so I'm planning on taping and fixing all those pages today and clearing them off my dresser and putting them back to use!
