With farm season coming up I really wanted to start a family night so we can all stay in touch and do something fun together every week. We have an almost 3yr and 5yr. Do any of you do this? What kinds of activities do you do or games do you play? Thank you

We are big on family night...and don't always do the normal things. Last week we played "sparkle" a spelling game..but we do all sorts of activities..from seed starting to cookie baking to leaf raking contests. We are big on board games too..harder until the kids are a little older..but we have been known to play HiHo cherry o or candyland as a family...the older kids just deal with it..haha
We have sheared sheep, built fences, and made a treat to take to a neighbor as a family night too..We have a game called Life on the Farm that we play alot. We play on teams with the youngest kids on a team with an older member of the family since it isn't an easy one for anyone under 8 alone..teams are fun anyhow. We play several games as teams. Mostly girls agains the boys (we are even right now!)
I think it is a fun thing to do..we have even had garden weeding with ice cream after.

These are all great ideas. We are forever "planning" to have a family night and it seems it never happens. We have really varying ages right now....17, 14, 3, baby, so it is hard to get everyone together. I'm going to steal some of your ideas and not get to hung up on the planning stage |

We are hit-or-miss with family night now that my kids are older and have jobs, etc. So, we have family day, family afternoon.... it's catch-as-catch-can! We still think it's important to get together when we can and play games (Phase 10 is a big hit here!), go through family pictures, organize someone's room for them (which is needed a lot!), give haircuts, cook together, etc. I think any activity where you are all together, having fun with no tension is a successful time.

When my boys were little Friday night was always family night. Since their Dad was not a game person(board game) this night usually involved dinner out and Movie rental. They took turns picking the restaurant and movie. Then we made popcorn, usually this night went on to include all the sleeping bags in the livingroom and they would "camp out" with Daddy on the couch. Since Dad worked late most nights this was a treat. As they got older we always went out to eat on a designated night. Everyone just knew to save that night. This worked until everyone graduated from high school and started to move out. I don't think it matters what you do as long as it is together. Everyone is grown now,but they are all close to each other. I think all the time we spent together has kept them close.

Everynight is family night at our house. Course there are only 2 of us! My hubby and I really enjoy spending time together. We even work in the same place! We usually have a movie night and a game night and then we always sit down in the dining area for dinner everynight. No TV dinners for us.

Hubby and I used to do a "date night" that was close to what you're talking about - we used to watch Monarch of the Glen on Friday nights, but after it went off the air, we stopped. I miss it.

I let the kids make cookies on their own, with the cookie dough already made, they get to shape it and put it on the baking sheets. Tic-tac-toe and dot-to-dot is very popular at our house.
