Well, after being a nomad and mostly a hermit for nearly ten years, I finally have a small (somewhat wonky) 125 year cottage in Kansas. I moved back to be close to my elderly parents as they needed a daughter's help.
The little house has sunk on one side about 6" from drainage issues (hubby fixed those) but we don't have the money to hike it up. There are other issues that bother my husband, but we don't have the money to pay to fix them and honestly, I couldn't care less, doesn't bother me. He's from Australia and wants to try to fix everything. I'm from these parts and have lived in old farmhouses before and know there's only so much you can do without money and if you can live in a sod house, you can live with this!
We have 3/4 of an acre and the house is somewhat smack dab in the middle so we have space from neighbors. There's a fenced in garden and three sheds. We only moved in late January and with helping my folks a lot we didn't raise a garden this year, but we did seem to raise a lot of poison ivy which I'm allergic to. I cleared out a ton of it but this fall, I'll pull out the rest and hubby will cut down and tar all the bigger trees of it.
Looking forward to a more self-sufficient lifestyle that includes a garden and maybe chickens. We already live on very little and if my husband would quit smoking we'd be living on about $1000 a month all bills and living expenses paid.
I already make nearly everything we own, and we buy second hand.
I'm so happy to finally have a home moving around about every 7 months for the last six years for my husband's work and our lack of funds. We married in 2011 and this is the first time we have lived alone with each other and not in a small bedroom in shared housing.
Woo-hoo! I have a (wonky) house!

Congratulations Allison on your new cottage! You don't need anything fancy to be happy, so I think your off to a great start! Good luck with your garden and chickens in the future. Make sure to share updates of your cottage. Hope all is well with your parents.

Allison, how is life at the cottage lately? Your mom? It all sounds perfect. Would love to see some pictures if you have them. Thanks

Your sweet "wonky" cottage sounds utterly divine... and being on the 'young' side has a lot of advantages as you grown and the funds come in you will be able to have your cottage 'grow' with you! I pray your mother is doing better? I wish you an amazing spring and summer in your 'wonky' cottage Allison!!

Are you still in your little cottage? You sound a lot like me---I have not seen this until now. We lived in a one hundred year old farmhouse for years and I loved it. When I inherited land we built a house and moved to the woods. I still miss my old house so much. And I too enjoy getting by on not much money. Good thing I do---lol. Wish you would post more about your life---we sound like kindred spirits.
